AH - A new creation! the mini tonebender!

Here it is - hot off the presses

Cute ain't it. it's about the size of an MXR pedal - but just a tad thicker. A little brutish brick.

But what lurks inside you ask.

Why a Jumbo Tonebender with a custom tone control.

That's right - I did the mod to a full size NYC muff and it was a success. I needed something small - something gig bag small - but with a big big sound. Needless to say this pedal loses no low end - at all - at any setting on the tone knob (a little trick of my own).

The board is a bit of a tight one - but luckily I only had to debug one thing (I had the input battery ground on the ring and the input signal on the ring - oops)

I did change a few things after having to get creative with some caps - but essentially it's the same as the tonebender NYC muff conversion in a previous thread.

I will also build a bluebeard Fuzz in the near future as I have another GGG BMP kit sitting next to me with the larger BB box. So I'll do a side by side comparison of the Bluebeard fuzz and the MuffBender soon.

here it is before I put the knobs on - and no - my hand isn't freakishly huge - the pedal is just THAT small.

and here's a shot of the guts

YOu'll notice to the right on the board what looks like two red caps sticking into one hole - it's a pair of .01uf caps in series to give me a value of .005uf - for the high side of the tone control.

awesome. did you have to mod it much? does it still sound like the original jumbo tonebender schematic would?

Save the matrix of the tone control - the pedal is exactly like a Jumbo Tonebender - as I used a tonebender schematic.

the Big Muff and the Tonbender are nearly identical - The muff has an extra pair of clipping diodes and an extra transistor stage (muff has four the TB has three - and has different trannies)

Furthermore - the GGG tuned Big Muff (general guitar gadgets) that the Bluebeard fuzz is made from - has nearly identical resistors to the tonebender.

That's why I feel the tone control and the clipping created by diodes and transistors play a major role in the character of the Muff style fuzz.

I'll post clips soon - I need to replace a pot that was damaged while soldering (it's really noisy along the sweep - tell tale sign of a cooked pot).

That looks great! I've built a tonebender using a GGG PCB. I'm going to eventually rehouse into a smaller enclosure similar to yours (at the moment it's in a bigger one). What PCB did you use?

I don't suppose you would want to share your low-end trick with me ? Is it the 0.005uf on the treble side?

Thanks,

Lyle

Was this a kit or did you make it from scratch?

To all interested - I am putting the number together right now for a run of say 25. The final product will have a powder coat finish and will be hand detailed. I'm thinking a bright blue LED for all you crazy mothers who think blue LEDs sound better.

Lyle - the tone control is a bit more complex than simply a the treble side cap change to a .005uf cap, there are a few resistor changes too - and in this incarnation I used a different pf cap on each transistor.

The pedal that I release for sale will reflect the prototype that I have down to the last cap and resistor.

Keep in mind - the fuzz is nearly flat at certain settings and it is FULL RANGE meaning you WILL hear just how sensitive your treble response is in your cab. What's great is the pedal is really transparent for a fuzz - as it sounds different depending on the rig you use it with.

I'm planning on getting a 1-spot for my board so where the battery is doesn't really matter to me, i'll just get the 9v adapter
