Akai Deep Impact as an Envelope only ?

I've never used one but I've been offered one in a trade.

The synth tones are not likely to see much use with me, but it looks like you can turn the balance to bass-only (no synth) and use it as an envelope filter.

Assuming I'm right, how does it sound as an envelope filter ?

It'll sort of work as an envelope follower but not traditional sounding. OTOH they are going for serious money these days so it should be easy to sell, I sold mine a couple of months ago to fund my new amp GK MB500.
