Alesis Quadraverb GT?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello guys.

I borrowed an old Alesis Quadraverb GT off my singer, really to try and get Jeff Buckley's guitar tone out the thing. However I got bored today and plugged my bass in, and it actually sounded ok....

...with a lot of tweaking. You can modify the parameters of the eq, and I found that with the mids fairly flat and with the compressor off you could get an ok sound out of the thing. I'm not planning to hock my pedals, but has anybody else encountered this thing?

Also why did Alesis ship them out with such rancid presets?

I used one of these in the early nineties through a power amp into my harkte cabinets. Worked for me at the time, wasn't great but definately not awful.

Not sure if I remember how any of the presets sounded I asssumed they wouldn't sound good for bass.

The QuadraVerb was Alesis flagship Effects processor. I bought mine in 1990 for $500 when I was 18 years old. It is still in my rack for effects To me it has the best reverbs and Chorus of any effects unit I have ever heard or tried. Back in the 90's I actually was getting calls to not only play bass but to run sound for theatre shows due to the QuadraVerb! I made a patch that sounded identical to Mariah Carey's "I'll be there" from Unplugged. I emulated the delay and reverb really well and used it on a sound gig for soloists. I had all kinds of compliments and my phone started to ring! To me its a classic.

But, The QuadraVerb GT..not so much. It was "ok" as a preamp but never had the quality of its effects only brother. As far as the guitar patches go...remember it was the early 90's and a whole different approach.

Mmmmm...aaahhh...yyyeeesss. The Quadraverb GT. For some reason or another, I thought it was the coolest preamp on the market at the time. ADA was big at the time, and frankly had better overall tones, but I really liked the deep-deep dive aspects of the GT. Coupled with a good power amp and some JBL speakers, I used it live and in the studio for a number of years in the 90's. Replaced it with my Sansamp PSA-1 and never looked back.

I use a QuadraVerb for the mono chorus and stereo pitch effects (the flanger works well too-like it's 1981 again). A ton of the presets are just horrible for bass (i.e. "King's Chamber"), but I find the above-listed to be really useful and it fits in the 1U space I had available. I keep looking for something new to replace it and to provide more versatility, but have had a hard time finding a rack unit.

I had a Quadraverb when I was playing bass the last time. It was an outstanding piece of gear. Sold it and wish to hell I hadn't. Now that I'm back on the bass, I'm looking for another one.

Ok, I'm looking for an E/P. Just picked it back up after a LONG time away. I have a Digitech GSP21 Legend but honestly afraid to even try it. Anybody out there ever tried Bass thru one of these units?
I'm currently running my old gear: Peavey ProBass1000 ~ Peavey Classic 50/50 ~ 4x12 Cab.
