ALL Hail Bongo (Compression is KING)!

I'd like to publicly thank Bongo... for his extensive (and accurate) reviews...

Credible info is often hard to find on the web... and Bongo offers it freely... my only problem now is compression GAS (that sounds really dangerous)... I have high hopes for the new MXR bass compressor... but I'll wait for Bongo's diagnosis...

A year ago (based on Bongo's review) I bought an Ashly CLX51 rack compressor... and today, my Exar bass compressor pedal arrived (hand made in Poland)...

The Exar is simply amazing... a great aggressive compressor that produces a ridiculous amount of sustain... coupled with the pure transparency of my Ashly (at the other end of my signal chain)... I get a beautiful rich tone, outstanding harmonics and extra midrange punch...

Thanks Bongo...

Any other TB members want to chime in with their own compression discoveries (thanks to Bongo)... ?

Bongo is certainly the man, bought one of his rejects and sold it to a gtr buddy and am using an OptiStomp that's doing the trick for now.
I wish he would review the comps available in the Line 6 M5, M9 or M13 to see how their LA2A model stacks up, or maybe he has.....

I bought a diamond bass compressor based in large part on his review, and so far I couldn't be more pleased. Thanks man!

Ditto to what everyone has said. After a few PMs with him, I zeroed in on the Philosopher's Tone, and it is exactly what I want out of a comp.

I actually printed out one of Bongo's intro's to compressors. After finally grasping what they do and how it affects your sound, I realized I don't need one. You'd think that someone that into something would be biased in it's favor. That is the ultimate, straight up knowledge with no agenda.

No doubt Bongo's the compression man around here.

How is the Philosopher's Tone? Can you use it for straight forward clean compression or is it more of an overdrive tool... ?

I have the grit knob all the way off and get no dirt out of it at all. Its compression is clean, but it is extreme. As Bongo said in his review, even with the sustain knob all the way down, it's still a pretty squashed compression. But I wanted it for a squashed tone effect, it's not an always-on type of compression for me. It does have a blend knob, which is nice because it allows you to keep your initial attack if you want. I love it.

Yeah Bongo knows his stuff and i'll always point people towards his site if they've got questions about compression or compressors, regardless of whether they're a bass player or not.

A great, well informed resource
