I do not know much about Bass Guitar effects. Say I had 150 to 200 dollars, I would like to find a pedal, that would not make my amp sound like another amp. Just one that would change my P bass to a little more smooth jazzy sound when I want it. One that would give me more options sound wise. I don't care much for distortion on bass. Does this make sense to anyone.

Get the BOSS SJS-1. It does smooth jazzy sounds very well.

I am reading and learning. I know when I played guitar,I did not care for a compressor. I don,t know about bass. Can you explain what a compressor will do, and how it will get me more of a jazzy sound when I need it. THANKS.

Check out some of the compressor faqs on the page I linked. Basically, compressors will calm transient spikes and make the entire signal more consistent. This can be used to smooth out your attacks and boost lower volume notes.

Have you tried just rolling the tone knob off on your P bass?

[sfx] Ultra-Tone might be a good option.
