All you synthy octave + mf101 + fuzz guys. Help!

So I've had the fooger LPF and octave thing going for quite some time now (I primarily play house + dnb and whatnot) and it seems like its universal that a fuzz is the next thing to get as far as synthy stuff goes. So I finally purchased a brown dog and just started messing around with it a few minutes ago but I've gotta say I'm confused on how its supposed to integrate with the lpf and octave.

I just can't really get the octave and the fuzz to cooperate very well, it kind of sounds like garbage to be honest.

I'm wondering, are you just using your brown dog as its own effect and not in conjunction with other stuff? Or am I missing something?

I don't own a Browndog, but I own plenty of Octave > Fuzz > LPF combos. First off, I'd start with them in that order. Find a sound you like on the Brown Dog alone, then mix it with the octaver. I've found that some extra fizzle on the fuzz is nice when slowly rolling it in via the LPF.

Out of curiosity, what's your octave pedal? The octavers that I've found to work the best for electronica tones with a fuzz and LPF are (in order) the OC-2 and MXR Bass Octave Deluxe.

I love the EBS Octabass for fretless and funk stuff but I don't like it nearly as much in this context. Digital octavers (POG etc) I don't like at all for these tones.

I have an OC2 and an OC3. One thing I actually find funny is that people seem to unanimously love the OC2. I actually seem to like my OC3 more for the most part because the OC2 seems so bland. The OC3 has more oomph to it especially when I'm sweeping the cutoff up on the moogerfooger, it has this great nasally synthy mid-range thing going on. But in any case, I have the traditional lpf + oc2 setup.

Source Audio Multiwave Bass Distortion Pro would probably work as well. Give it a listen at www.sourceaudio.net

I use Brown Dog+OC-2.they didnt get along very well for me too at the beginning.now I juz lower the gate Knob (on brown dog) to 9 o'clock or less and its better.also turn the Oct 2 all the way down,Oct 1 as u want, level at 12 o'clock or more. You got to take time sitting with them and you will get the best sweet spot.

You could also use a really brash synthy octave down like the 4ms Nocto Loco or MI Audio Pollyanna. I really like the sound in this clip (from FightThePower), which I believe is a Pollyanna into a Moog MF-101:

When I had one, it would be used between the OC-2 and Lowpass filter; It takes very clean playing to get a super-clean gate out of it, if thats what you're going for, otherwise I'd just gate it a bit under a filter for filter sweeps...

Though I didn't care for the sound nearly as much as I did the Pollyanna under a filter, so I sold it after a while. The Pollyanna's gate is very tight, and factoring an octaver into the equation, the Pollyanna's whole package as a clean-waveform substitute tracks and sounds better than the OC-2+BrownDog in my opinion. The Pollyanna and Nocto as dannybouy suggested is my choice for octave-fuzz.

John and rnislon use the WoolyMammoth in place of the Brown Dog, but in the same config that has been mentioned in this thread-- octave into fuzz into filter... -1oct solo'd with no dry tone, and just a little 'dry' on the BrownDog til desired lowend is achieved. The filter goes last to filter out harsh high frequencies, and the fuzz provides harmonic content and texture for the filter to work with when swept. Thats pretty much it for the basic application, the other guys who've posted in the thread covered it pretty well and know what they're talking about.
