So it just occurred to me that I truly have no "effects" in my rig. None. Nada. Zip. Just a preamp, sonic maximizer, and power amp. I've tried a few before, they're just not for me, and I'm perfectly content with my sound. Now I'm starting to wonder, how many other bass players are like this? It seems like when those "show your pedalboard" threads come up, everybody and their brother has some pedals, so I'm curious to get an actual sample

I rarely use pedals, but I still have a small board that has a comp, chorus, delay (with tap), flanger, and filter. I really only use the comp, but the chorus and delay get love on a few originals. The flanger and filter are more for fun. They may end up getting the axe soon.

You might try posting about how you prefer taping a stethoscope to your bridge in the amps forum also.

Edit: "once and awhile" is a thought provoking non-sequitur and it makes a tough contender to carrots. kudos!

Well, it looks like the poll is indicating that I'm not the only one

My board has gone from small to big to small to big, having noticed that most of my effects were only being used in my bedroom. Now I keep it simple - filter, compressor, octave, and overdrive.

Other than my fuzz, envelope filter, OD, tube preamp thinger, crazy *** second voice thinger, moar fuzz, non warbling chroma chorus, starving crazy feedbacking mofo of a polygrace, reverb, delay, looper, tremelo, even moar fuzz, synth pad, super puzzely octave fuzz, and the more dirt and even more fuzz fuzz that I want to get I don't use pedals at all. So I totally agree.

I only use one effect, an Xotic EP Booster, but its always on. Other than that and a volume pedal I don't use effects, but I'm looking for a chorus or phaser to use occasionally.

I use effects on bass all the time. but I don't use too many effects. the only effects I ever use on bass is distortion and chorus. sometimes I mess around with flanger effects, but other than that, I mainly use distortion and chorus for my sound. I currently own a zoom b2.1u(which I use for recording and live performances) and a korg "toneworks" ax5b(that multi-effects processor I only use for recording). there's really nothing wrong with using effects. if you don't need effects and you're very satisfied with your set-up, then you don't have to buy any effects. but it doesn't hurt to experiment with effects. everyone has their own personal taste in effects.

If they fit the song, I'll use 'em....otherwise not.
I use Line 6 boards so I get "stuck" with whatever they have in them with the Jet Flanger sim being a favorite(Mars Cowling, Pat Travers).

Well, here in the Effects forum, we generally have and use effects in our rigs. Because we love irony so much.

Yes, you're the only one.
You're a freakin' weirdo, and you should go to confession. You probably have hair on your palms, too.
And the folks who said "never" - they're lying, they're only trying to make you feel better about yourself. Sicko.

OK?

I've only got an Ibanez PD-7 (which I want to replace with separate distortion and overdrive pedals) and a Boss CE-5 chorus right now. In the band I play in, I don't really need much more. I appreciate effects and people who can integrate them well in songs, but for me, really just overdrive and chorus is what I need.

i get that there are utility pedals and "effect" pedals. my overdrive, since its always on, would be utility. compressors, eq's, enhancers and the like. whereas the delays and choruses and filters are for a sudden effect.

i use both. 100% on overdrive and occasional chorus.

All I have is a Jacques Fat Burner Comp & Catalinbread SFT but I use them just to warm up my tone and add a little bit of old school grit. I don't really consider that an "effect".

They're fun to play with but I just never found appeal to them that suited me.

At the minimum, you should get a solid overdrive pedal. Nothing feels better on bass than to have some dirt a click away. It really gives you that extra power in your tone to tell the crowd you mean business. Why should guitarist have all the fun? Effects can be relatively inexpensive compared to other parts of your rig. Explore a little and have some fun.

I'm going to the amps forum right now and post a poll to see who has ditched power amps in favor of going direct to the PA (just like Geddy Lee). Because,... oh... wait... nevermind...

-carrots-

By the way, if it changes your tone at all, its an effect... this includes tuners with lousy bypass buffers. Just saying...
