Amp/room modelling, acoustic nerds requested

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is my situation: I play an electric double bass both pizz and arco, I often use the signal for front of house sound, or recording. The pizz sound is very nice, but I find the sound of arco to be quite raw (its not me I swear)

When the signal is listened through headphones, it sounds raw and grindy, but put through an amp and played in a room/venue, the sound is fine. The amp/speaker/room together seem to have a mellowing effect on the mid range harmonics in the signal, which is where the raw grindy sounds are.

I would like to re-create that effect digitally, for recording or FOH use. How can I go about that? What are some pedals? I think this goes far beyond EQ modelling, and incorporates reverb and other theory Im probably not aware of.

I know what you mean. I have an electric violin and my sister has an electric cello, and I find hard to get a similar sound to the one from an acoustic instrument from them. I would say, if you like the sound you get through a bass amp, you could try with some amp-modeling pedal (Vt Bass?); and then add some reverb if you need it. If you want to have the possibility of blending the dry signal, you could try the Para Driver DI.

Sorry if I couldn't help more, but I'm no acoustic nerd.

When I used to do a lot of synthesis, I would generate a rough sawtooth for bowed instruments, and then model the body with some kind of short reverb/filter combo, and then place that into a larger space when doing a larger mix.

When I started using pedals for the same kind of synthesis when using a stringed instrument as a sound source, I hit on using a high end Boss acoustic simulator to generate the roughness and body... and then I run it through a Verbzilla to roll off the rough edges.

So, I think you probably would be well served by experimenting with a reverb which has a mix knob, predelay and tone available.

Good luck!
