Amp Screech Effect

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, ive looked all over the place and decided just to join this place since ive seen a lot of posts from here while searching google...
anyway... im looking to get a screech effect on que... for example right in the middle of the guitar solo in tool's Jambi, you hear a really cool amp screech. idk if that was just a fluke and it was just an amp overloaded w/ effects pedals or what but i thought it sounded pretty sweet and want to get the same effect on my bass.
any ideas?

this is called feedback. getting close to your amp with high gain or very high volume causes this to happen.

the more you turn your amp up (and your pickups), and the closer you get, the more feedback you will get. Do you use distortion? if you do, you can turn up the HIGH on the distortion petal and that will make it easier. If not, I'm not entirely sure what you could do besides what i have suggested.

and ive tried a lot of things to get the sound i want, pinch harmonics, the feedback thing etc.
so thanks for the advice though

can you tell me what equipment you're using? i use an ibanez RDGR and a line 6 lowdown300 and i can get massive amounts of feedback WITHOUT my effects pedals.

same here, I use a hollowbody so feedback comes naturally, but even with my SWR workinmans combo and Squier J I could get some mean feedback, not really squeal-type but more like swell-type lows

In my experience Acoustic has had a very tame, organic sound. For most people bass feedback is undesirable anyway, but the only thing i can think of is to have a high gain/distortion pedal and then use it ONLY for feedback. You would leave it off most of the time, and when you needed feedback you would kick it on for a duration then turn it off again. Try noodling around with the higher side of your eq with the volume up on your amp and bass, to see if you can get some. I'm not sure what else you could try.

hmm... ill have to try that that sounds interesting
i could probably borrow a distortion pedal from one of my friends (when your in marching band almost all of your friends have a band too)
so... thanks for the advice then

ok... i turned up the gain on my bass and i think why i wasnt getting any feedback is because i had my high end turned down a lot on my EQ so anyway, now im getting what id deffinitly consider feedback but not really the kind of effect i was lokkin for... but it is kinda close i guess ill just have to fiddle with it
probably if i use some pinch harmonics with that i might get closer to the effect im looking for.

As others have said. I can crank up my tube amp and stand in front of the cab and get feedback galore.

I got the most feedback when playing near my amp using a lightweight bass (my Warwick's body is swamp ash), using high gain effects, and using a delay. That combination yielded me enough noise to fill several minutes with a variety of feedback tones we threw together as potential backroll for a recent recording project.

Not the best pedal for that sort of thing. It doesn't cause feedback so much as it sustains and oscillates the note you're playing when you activate the feedback function. And the distortion on it is pretty weak as well.

The way forward would be an OTT distortion/overdrive pedal (boss metal zone, perhaps. It's a known fact that everyone in the world is no more than 5 metres away from someone that owns one at any time.) in front of an amp with the volume turned waaaaay up. Or a boss HM-2, which gives me the 'ice pick in the ear' kind of feedback that plays such a huge role in our music.

I know that you said that you don't have much cash on hand, so this won't necessarily help, but if you can save up, the Dwarfcraft Devices Eau Claire Thunder pedal could be just what you're looking for. It's a huge fuzz/distortion, and has a momentary feedback switch specifically for generating short squeally bursts of feedback.

http://www.dwarfcraft.com/Distortion_and_Fuzz.html

Scroll down - it's the third or fourth pedal down. The videos are all ridiculously hilarious.

The only downside for your budget is that it costs around $250. But hey - it's pretty badass.

EDIT: Aen covers the feedback switch around 6:38 of the Eau Claire Thunder video. Crazy stuff.

The screech sound you hear in Jambi is not on bass. The only feedback from bass in Tool is Lost Keys and that's done with his Tonebender and having his amps loud.
