He uses the old (discontinued) green Russian Big muff, and (also discontinued) Morley Fuzz Power Wah.

The two pedals that are not discontinued that will get you an almost identical sound are the EHX Bass Big Muff, and a Morely Power Wah.

They sound killer together.

Welcome to talkbass!

Just a heads up: you can search the forums to see if the thread you're about to make has already been made.

Metallicafan's got the answer covered.

Grr. This has been said before many times, so I'm not sure why this myth continues to endure .... Cliff did NOT use a Russian Big Muff. EHX didn't produce a single pedal in Russia until '89 or '90. Cliff absolutely had to have used a USA Big Muff, as that was all that existed at that time.

I did not know that.

Either way though, the bass big muff will have you covered.

Cliff used either a Ram's Head or the Red and Black Big Muff (ver.3/ver.6). Make sure to drive the muff hard with a tube amp to get that super smooth sustain tone.

This is Cliff Burton we're talking about here..
He went forward in time, and secured a Russian Big Muff. Of course, he had to diguise it because of the problems that would arise from having a technically non-existent pedal.
Therefore, he used the power of the gods granted to him to completely modify the pedal's outward appearance with his mind.

But in all seriousness, thanks for the info! Now I won't go buy a Russian one and think it's just what Cliff used.

Also... which Morley exactly?

I thought it was a Power Wah Boost and not a Fuzz Power Wah.

Not sure, just parroting what I heard.

A Weeping Demon will do just fine IMO instead of finding the right Morley.

This

I used a CryBaby 535Q with a BBM and got a pretty close sound as well

Also,

... Cliff also used a BOSS CS-1 (or CS-2) compressor pedal and a Tubescreamer pedal...

I am fairly certain Mr. Burton also used an Ibanez TubeScreamer 808 distortion pedal. Whether or not he used it on the album recording is another question, but I am pretty sure it was a part of his gear.

But if you want a real quality pedal you go for the Morley.
Plus the Demon has no vibe, IMO.

Of course, I've been spoiled by Morley. (Currently have 4 Morley Wahs and a Morley Volume...)

according to the book "to live is to die" and his tech John Marshall, Cliff used a morley power wah fuzz and a 'red compressor'. He is referring to the recording of the second album there. John also says that Cliff didn't change his gear too often, so it might be fair to assume that it was very similar for the first album

Hey... people should take your advice over me when it comes to wah pedals.
I don't know you... but I'm 100% sure you know A LOT more about wah then me.

I am definately not an expert.

Just so far the Weeping Demon is the only user-friendly for a dummie like me.

I also have about zero interest in wah... so nvm my opinion on this effect.

Sorry...

I got this picture from someone else on TB. (forgot his name but all credit to him)

IIRC he didn't had the full article either.

I doubt that was serious, but the internet has no sarcasm font to tell.

There's a reason I included the "IMO" and "I've been spoiled by Morley.."

And before you accuse me, I picked the Morley over the Weeping Demon, I did try a few wahs out first.
I'm not just saying because I like Morley, but because the Demon seriously lacked for me.
