You should be a bit more specific. You want the fuzz to be synthy, smooth, creamy...?
BTW, how did the fuzz factory work for you? I've heard it losses too much low end to be usable in a band setting, is it true?

I can recommend some very articulate overdrives, but if you want fuzz or heavy distortion, forget it--they will always blur notes together. Nature of the beast, and you will never be happy with even the best of them.

Have a look at the Aguilar AGRO. It ranges from mild to wild, but has a great presence control to retain clarity. I'm sure there are other options, too, but that's my recommendation.

Bongo, I'd like to hear your recommendations for an articulate OD. Affordable (say...$150 or less) would be nice, but I'm willing to blow more if something is THAT much better.

I have a DOD bass overdrive that's pretty nice. Unfortunately, she's on her way out.

I get enough distortion from my FUZZrite, my Gonkulator, and the pedals I throw together when I get bored .

a fuzz thread without the mentioning of the musket! :O

I've heard some people play chords and double stops through this and on a mild setting it seems to come out quite clearly, although you've tried a few big muffs so maybe this isn't the pedal for you. Can't wait for my musket to arrive

Creation Audio Holy Fire, Durham Sex Drive, Zeibek Gemini Drive, Dredgetone Bass Angler, and "Red Llama" clones. The RL clones are made by many smalltime and boutique pedal builders; for one example you'll find lots of posts here about the "Polish Love" by Bogdan. Note that I'm only calling the Zeibek and the RL clones "articulate" at their lower drive settings.

^^^ Not answering the OP's request for dirt that doesn't smear notes together.

Any kind of a fuzz pedal is probably going to blur notes together and be relatively muddy and, well, thicken things up. To some extent I think that's inevitable.

However, I will say that I have a Wounded Paw Battering Ram, and it's a freaking beast.
http://www.woundedpaw.com/catalog/pr...roducts_id=150
Between the overdrive and the ability to add the extra fuzz oomph on top of it, it offers some serious versatility, and I dig the fuzz. It can produce sounds pretty much across the chart, from just the slightest fuzz to swarm-of-wasps-type fuzz (if you get my meaning).

Anyway, it's pretty pricey, but it doesn't seem like you're hesitant to invest money into finding this holy grail of a pedal that you're searching for... Although, again, if you've tried that many pedals and you still are looking it might be wise to consider the fact that you might be searching for something in the wrong place or searching for the wrong thing (read: effect)...?
