Another "how to get this sound" thread: Dubstep style

Sign in to disble this ad
I know there are a ton of threads on how to get dubstep wobble, but I want someone to tell me exactly how to get this exact tone.

That is a great bass sound.

Hard to do on bass guitar. You want to start with a good sawtooth sound that tracks well, so you want a Korg G5 or a Line 6 M9, double it with an octaver to keep the fat bottom end (so you'd probably want an analog octaver like an OC-2 for the tone and an LS-2 to do the blending), and you want to end with a good treadle-controlled filter like the Moog MF-101 or a Meatwad clone. But there's more subtlety in that sound that you will struggle to cop, I think most of it will involve being an excellent bass player.

Again, great bass sound.

The hardest part will be getting the formant filter sounds on the second half of the pattern. The 'Yeeoh Yeeoh' sounds. I would recommend looking in the direction of adding a sample rate reducer to your sawtooth/filter solution to do that (search for my Bugcrusher samples in this forum to see how that might work out).

Dubstep is often created with computers and synths. Bassnectar is no exception.
kevteop has a pretty good idea on it. It's not a cheap process, this dubstep fad.

Ive seen Bassnectar a whole bunch of times and I have to say thats one of the few Dubstap tracks I've actually enjoyed. You actually want to move to it as opposed to sit in a K hole.

Bassnectar is awesome, I've never been able to understand why there are so many haters when there are CLEARLY way more horrible things affecting the music industry today.

That said, spend $300 on a used synth and download some mixing software. You can try to get the dubstep tone on a bass guitar but it will probably drive you nuts.

Ooo I think my quote was misinterpreted, I like Bassnectar, hence seeing him multiple times. I just think theres a whole lot of redundant dubstep out there.

There's a loooot of stuff going on in the bassline that would be extrememy hard to mimic all of with effects while playing bass. All in a short time, there's LFO rate change, frequency changes, and that formant filter sound coming in (and probably more stuff).

Fantastic sound though.

I would definitely use at least 2 pedals. probably synth pedal with a sawtooth sound and a another pedal as an autowah that could be kicked in and out. would probably be much easier to do with an analog synth though instead of bass guitar because of tracking issues.

That's pretty standard dubstep fare... they must have dubstep buttons for this sound on Reason by now.

But other posters and threads go into great detail about how to attain this with gated fuzzes, octaves, filters and expression pedals.

I know I would like to do everything on my bass, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and admit that it would be much easier (and probably cheaper) to do with a synth.

This genre is incredibly oversaturated. It also hasn't really gone anywhere since 2006.

+1 back atcha. I love dubstep, but am very selective these days to what I listen to cause a lot of it sounds much the same to me.

On a side note, I hate the dubstepification of other music genre!
