Another "whats this effect" thread

I have been tasked to learn "Makes me Wonder" by Maroon5. Pretty cool song.

So the bass is highly synthesized through a lot of the song. I have been searching for this type of effect. I have thought about fuzz or some type of synth or a combination of both. Maybe the EHX Bass Micro Synth. Maybe the square wave turned up for some distorted sound.

I maybe at a loss and should try to come as close as possible because it was more than likely programmed anyway.
Here is an article on that http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep0...track_0907.htm
I bring this to the fine folks of TB, especially the effects savvy. Does anybody know this effect?

First, I hate you for making me listen to a Maroon 5 song to answer your question. Second, that sounds to me like a synthy-fuzzy octave above clean bass could ballpark it, or maybe the right octave-up fuzz could do it (clean blend necessary to get the sound right--Brassmaster might be a good fit here, though it is going to sound messier than the track). I'm not hearing lazers or bloops or blips in there, but the BMS could probably pull it off, with the dry, +1 octave, square wave, and the filter set to not move.

yea, just a synth fuzz sort of thing. octave up.

although id say its most likely the keys doing that and the bass gated to it, but for the sake of doing it live, square wave fuzz (preferably gated), octave up, dry blend, as mentioned above.
