Another "Where in the Signal Chain" Thread - TC Nova Dynamics

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, decided to take a chance and order the TC Electronic Nova Dynamic pedal that Musician's Friend is blowing out. For $99 it isn't much of a risk and, if it works well, it will take care of a lot of things I've been wanting to add to my pedalboard.

I'm hoping to be able to plug both my electric upright and Stingray 5 into it and use one channel for very light, subtle compression for both basses and the other channel for a squashy compression for slapping on the Stingray.

My effects chain is:

MXR Bass Octave Deluxe > Wren & Cuff Phat Phuk B > MXR Bass Envelope Filter > Tech 21 VT Bass > Boss GEB-7 EQ. I have this chain worked out well and don't want to change the order of any of these pedals.

Where would you stick the Compressor? I'm thinking after the VT Bass and before the EQ. I'm thinking I'd only use the effects in conjunction with the subtle compression channel and probably never with the slap channel.

Thoughts?

I think after the VT is a decent choice; putting it in front of the VT or the PPB would affect the dynamic response of their drive/dirt, and putting it in front of the filter would affect its dynamic response.

That was my thought. Hopefully the pedal I get doesn't have the "tink" sound you reported in your review. Did you get a chance to experiment with plugging different instruments into the A & B inputs to see how effectively their "auto-sensing inputs" work?

Yes, the auto-sensing worked well. It's like I said in the review, everything about that pedal worked brilliantly, and was very well designed, except for what was for me a fatal flaw. And not everyone has had that issue.

I think I may be happy with just the multiband anyway. Thanks for the info.

Just as a follow up, the pedal came yesterday.

Stomp mode is definitely Chirp City. It's really obvious, and I can't believe nobody at TC Electronic was able to reproduce this. The interesting thing though is that it doesn't chirp when I slap, which is what I plan on using stomp mode for anyway. Multiband mode seems to do a great job of taming peaks without imposing a sonic imprint on my sound.

All in all, this pedal is perfect for what I need it for. I just won't bother trying to play fingerstyle in stomp mode.
