Any body know Les Claypools effects setup for the album Antipop? Sounds like some OD, a flanger/phaser and an envelope filter for most songs. Anybody know any specifics? I have to say, some of my favorite effects tones come from this album.

Also, I'm working on a theory. Tom Morello played guitar on the song Mama Didn't Raise No Fool. The bass distortion on that song sounds extremely similar to Tim Commerfords famous sound. Just played with one of Les Claypools basses. Anybody think that Tim Commerford let him play through his rig for that song? Just occurred to me when it came on random on my iPod on my way to work today. Anybody agree/disagree?

Doesn't sound like Timmy C's OD tone to me at all. What's similar is Tom Morrello doing a unison riff with a distorted bass. I tend to hit closest to 'that Timmy C tone' when using an octave up harmony (WH4) going into a distortion.

To my ears, Claypool's tone on that track sounds like an untriggered envelope filter to a distortion. So, it's most likely whatever Korg multi he was using for filters and what-not through a modified ADA MP-1 guitar pre. At least according to TB, BP Mag and figuring out the chronology (he uses a DM4 now, but it wasn't released til 2000 I think).

Listen to the part that starts at around 1:40. And 3:00. And 4:15. That last one is an especially good example. Maybe I'm just hearing things.

Yeah, Les Claypool.

Sounds nothing like the ADA pre - surely that's the sound of Frizzle Fry and Seas Of Cheese. Also, he had began to endorse Ampeg by that stage.

Look, I agree with the OP (the tone on Laquer Head blows my mind) but I learnt long ago that it's pointless chasing studio sounds. Specially when it comes to freaks of nature like Les because we all know 50% of his tone is in his hands, 40% is in those amazing CT basses, and 10% is one-off studio magic!

I'm not talking about bass, playing style or amp tone. I want to know what he was using for an envelope filter, OD and flanger. Not going to happen? Yes, it all sounds like Les Claypool. But the tones I'm looking for weren't created by his hands.

I know what you're after, but yes, I think you're out of luck. The Korg mutli's he has mentioned would be a starting place, but my feeling is that the overall tone has a lot to do with many other factors that would include his amps etc.
