Any Decent Overdrive Pedals? Hello TB :) Name says it all really :P. Does anybody know of any decent Overdrive/Distortion pedals?. I play alot of Rock and Metal and i use a 500K PBass with distortion to get a Frank Bello kind of sound. Currently use a Hartke 210C however its looking likely my next amp is going to be a Hartke LH. Great sounding clean amp so its looking like im going to need a pedal. I know Bello uses a Sansamp Bass Driver however they are nearly impossible to find in the UK, does anybody know any other good distortion/overdrive pedals? :) |
They're all decent. Here's the last one I looked at: http://youtu.be/JurADeneBGc It's from Finland. Should be no problem for you to get. |
Darkglass makes some great stuff. I also like the Aguilar Aggro. |
Try a Darkglass! Rather expensive but the sound is immaculate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXLr21FZCAE I mean, SERIOUSLY. That's probably the finest overdrive pedal ever made. :3 __________________________________________________ ___________________ Too expensive? You could always try a RAT distortion with the LM308 chip, although that might not be bassy enough for you. I love mine, I run it through an ODB-3 with some EQ and I get a surpisingly bass-heavy, electronics-pushed-to-the-edge tone from it. It is a guitar pedal, so there's a quite a bit of low end loss, easily EQ'd back in though. With a little bass boost and some knob tweaking, a clean (ha) RAT sounds a lot like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxseYnCaMIk It's aggro as all get-out, closing in on lo-fi. It's not for everyone, but I wouldn't trade my big box for anything... except maybe a Darkglass or an Animato (0% probability on that one). ;D __________________________________________________ ____________________ If you want more than a RAT, try a Fuzzrocious Rat Tail/Rat King. The Fuzzrocious is basically a souped-up RAT that works wonders on bass and keeps way more lows. I personally don't have one but a lot of people love them- Fuzzrocious are good people and their pedal prices are good for a boutique company, you might want to look into them for some options that aren't so run-of-the-mill. They have tons of options for heavy/grungey bass tones. Fuzzrocious Grey Stache, a souped-up Big Muff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3xJdygleEk __________________________________________________ _____________________ Devi Ever makes some great pedals as well. She does quality work and a most of her pedals are right on the $100 mark. Check out her Black Spider overdrive/distortion mashup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTd3SJM3fQc It's a combination pedal and you can dial in some serious WAOHW-WAOHW-WAOHW type blowing-up amp sounds on it. She even makes a $50 distortion now: http://www.deviever.com/fx/dont-fear-the-noise/ She rawks. :3 __________________________________________________ _____________________ |
I love my Fulltone OCD. It does a great job of going from a very light soft clipping Overdrive to an almost all out fuzz. The knobs are very sensitive and really do a lot of tone shaping. The OCD also can give a clean boost of 18bs, a huge boost if you want to make that Hartke of yours have a bigger bite. It is a cheaper option to the Aguliar and Darkglass already mentioned, and this one should be much easier to find around town to play with. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ampli...-effects-pedal |
I have the Darkglass Micro Tube and it is a phenomenal pedal. Lots of tone options, plus a blend which is a must for me. I would put it in the distortion category more than the overdrive category. Same with the Boss ODB3 pedal; I think that pedal is totally mislabeled as being and overdrive. I also own the Aguilar Tone Hammer DI which has the AGS circuit built into it. It has a nice vintage warmth that tries to capture the sound of an amp being pushed too hard. Its also very heavy in the mids, like a lot of what Aguilar does. |
My all-time favorite OD is made right in your backyard. DHA (davehallamps.co.uk) pedals can certainly do very light to crashin' down overdrive. It's all a matter of taste though. |

For overdrive I LOVE my Hardwire Tube Overdrive. It's solid state, but has both low and high controls, and a switch to give you more or less grit. It's a great sounding pedal on bass (and drives my Big Muff really really well). |
there are tons of great OD's. IMO, the creation audio labs holy fire is one of the best. |
I'm going to throw another +1 at the Darkglass : ) |
The B3K is great. Also the new Darkglass pedal (forget the name) seems like a real winner if you want more traditional, less metal sounds. |
There is a ton of info here on TB if you have the time and patience to look for it; it might be more informative than waiting for others to chime in on this thread. Here, for example: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/ov...-quest-882997/ Good Luck! |
Darkglass B3K |
Fulltone OCD rules! I tried fulltone bassdrive, roger mayer voodoo-bass 2, bass-muff pi...all of them are losing a little bit low-end with effected sound. Only OCD(with 18v) keeps the low-end almost 95%, and distort high-end sweetly when picking hard. Really open-sounding! (Marcus Miller uses OCD, too!) |
the only pedal i'm interested in at this time is fuzzrocious dark driving to contrast my wmd geiger counter bass version |
There are many to choose from, you just have to find what works for you. My overdrive choice on bass is a Hjart Muller Lo|Fat from Moody Sound, on guitar and piccolo I like DanElectro Daddy O. |

I'm having great results with the SS/BS Mini. |
As others have said, there are many threads already on this topic. My vote goe to the Pork Loin. It is more overdrive than distortion, if that is what you are after. I have one and love it. Although, I will say, that the Darkglass is tough to beat if you want more tonal options. Or just get both and be done with it!! |
