Any electronics repair folks that know Zoom products?

Sign in to disble this ad
My Zoom Player 3000B got a brief but powerful accidental power surge to instrument input jack. So now it just hums badly if a cord is inserted into instrument jack. With nothing plugged in its quite as can be and functions seem to work according to display screen ect when playing around with it. Any idea what repair might run? Power surge to input jack was via soldering iron very briefly touching cord plug at isntrument end while other end was plugged into zooms input with power off. A loud "POP" sound at instrument jack was heard. No damage at all to anything else. Yes it was stupid accident I could have avoided if had payed more attention and unplugged cord before deciding to improve a solder joint on the instrument jack cord was in. Or at least should have taken cord out of processor first even though it was turned off.

I'd rather fix my player 3000B rather then get one of their current high end units if possible. Been my bass processor for at least ten yrs. And would have p[rob continued to be for many more yrs if was still working.

If you're lucky you'll have just fried a cap or resistor on the input, if you open it up, fried components are quite easy to spot.

If you're unlucky you've damaged a chip, which will need replacing. I'm afraid I can't help you with that one.

post back with gutpics!

Hi jimbob, I cant see any obvious sign of fried part. Had opened it up yesterday and gave good look over hoping to see such. Had been thinking if had seen such then could contact whatever little local electronics repair place to see if they could replace burned part. Samsontech says they may be able to repair if parts are available. $50hr plus parts.

The little square chip to the left of input jack as prob what got damaged?

Wow, all your cap legs are rusty...that's...retro.

I agree, I can't see anything obviously fried, but it looks like you have some surface mount components on the underside of the board, could you post another pic of the other side of the PCB?

Jimbob...> No componants of any kind on the other side. I reopened it just to recheck that, nothing there except clean looking solder joints.

Ok, thanks for that. I still can't see any fried components, so it looks like you may have damaged a chip. I doubt it's the one by the jack socket, as the tracking on the board looks like that chip has nothing to do with the input. Unfortunately, replacing chips in old tech is a bit of a nightmare.

Sorry, but my knowlege runs out here! I really hope you get it working again!

K, thanks Jimbob. Gotta decide wether its better to save up some and get the Zoom B9.1ut or get mine fixed. Geaussing repair of mine may run $150-$200 for labor time at $50hr plus parts thru samsontech. Kinda hoped someone here would chime in that had a 3000B in great working condition that theyd sell me for $100=$150 for replacement. Lol.

Well, do what feels right. The only thing to look out for, is a lot of repair techs will use situations like this (a tricky repair on an old, but not rare, piece of gear) to squeeze a lot more money out of you than you should be paying. If the repair guy offers you a good price, go for it! But if the quote is as high as $150, just don't go there IMO.

Jimbob..> Good advice about max cost to pay, Ty. Decided in light of prob cost would make more sense to get the Zoom B9.1UT Bass Multi-Effects Pedal as replacement. Should be in my paws thursday or friday.
