Are you looking for a head or a combo?

Here are a couple. Used will buy you more wattage though.

For that price range, there's not much, you should look for used equipment on craigslist and similar things, or B-stock from musiciansadvocate.com and similar places, or look for similar deals.

Or then, when you find one you like, don't worry so much about the price even if it's above $400, just get it.

I would save my money and check out the 300W combos from Ampeg to be released soon this year, myself. 100W is an icky power range, it's Ok for home use and small combos. But for any gigs -- especially with a loud drummer and/or guitar player(s) -- most likely you need to send your bass signal over a PA to be heard. --Kent

I am evangelical about using amp simulators (line 6 pod/ sansamp ect). Why? When you play live you take your rig into a DI box, that then goes to the mixing desk. The amp is just for on stage sound, and even that is backed up by the monitors. If your not playing in this way, your probably in a tiny venue where no one cares about you (not being harsh, i have been there). So I would say anything that is sturdy and solid state.

I am actually pretty evangelical about NOT using amp simulators, I've never heard one that sounded or felt like the real thing. The amp is half of the sound of an ELECTRIC bass, throw a mic up there and let the audience hear the same thing you hear.

What I like about amp simulators is not to sound like a special amp, instead key in a special sound that is unique and what you like. So having amp simulation is a way to customize your sound so you don't sound like everyone else. --Kent
