Looking for something vintage sounding and preferably low $$$.

I thinking Jack Bruce on Apostrophe but lighter/mellower.

GO get an Epiphone EB-3 for $299 and a bass overdrive stomp box and you'll be set.

Ok, after browsing through youtubes I think i found what I'm looking for.

Catalinbread SFT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EILrx...eature=related

Not too pricey either.

But if anybody can recommend something else similar to this, I liked to check it out as well.

Check out the Tech 21 VT Bass, Creation Audio Holy Fire, Barber LTD SR, Dredge-tone Angler and the BJFE BBOD.

Just a few to think about .

good recommendations from gnasher1993, but of the five, just the VT bass and Barber LTD (i actually prefer the NON-SR) are readily available/affordable.

The SFT seems to be a good option as well. A "similar" OD would be the Xotic Bass BB Preamp - same tone stack as the SFT (yep, it's a baxandall).

Got a tube amp or pre already? a BOOST pedal might be all you really need. I'm using the Xotic Bass RC booster to drive my tubes (it is more of a low clipping OD than an actual boost but hey), fulltone fat boost (in its variations) would be another decent choice. Heck, an ehx LPB-1 is a purty good boost and that sucker is CHEAP

A definite yes to this ^. If that is the case, I definitely recommend the Fulltone Fatboost (v1 is my personal favourite).

The Barber LTD is the definition of great light overdrive for bass at an accessible price.

No one else has mentioned it, but the EHX Germanium OD is a great vintage OD, and can go anywhere from clean boost up to cool fuzzy battery-starved stuff. One of my favorite all-time OD's.

If you have an appropriate amp a cheap way to experiement is to buy a used LPB-1 off ebay for under $35

Not meaning to highjack the thread, but can the Germanium OD do a crunchy type tone?

Just had a thought seeing as one arrived in the post for me this morning...

Check out the EHX Bass Blogger, it's great for both OD and fuzz tones. I've had a play with it for a few hours this afternoon and I'm really impressed. It's alot better than I expected. I got it from a trade and wasn't really sure what to hope for.

I think you should try it out. It's pretty good value (some may say cheap ). You may be pleasantly surprised.

I'd suggest you first listen to the song instead of counting all ODs you can think of

Crunchy is such a subjective term, it's hard to answer that. I did a bunch of demo clips of the Germ for another thread. I believe those clips are in the wiki if you want to go listen to them.

Don't be mad at me. It was general comment not personal. I thought about all of us.

I hadn't heard, or heard of the song before... pretty cool tune, very buzzy bass... Maestro Fuzz Tone? That's the first thing that pops in my head, though not sure I've even heard clips of it.

Yup, you are absolutely correct. I think I'm wanting an OD rather than a fuzz anyways. "Apostrophe" is definitely a thick buzzy fuzz. Although I would like to find something that can do that too. I'll start a new thread for that.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm still leaning towards that SFT.

Anybody try a Subdecay Liquid Sunshine for bass?
