Anybody ever try to open up a Boss AC adapter?

Sign in to disble this ad
The cable on my Boss PSA-120 AC adapter has developed a short. I believe it's in the area that connects to the adapter itself. I could fix the cable if I could just crack open the casing without destroying it. Anybody ever successfully open one of these things up? I tried Google'ing but didn't come up with any hits.

Thanks,
Bob

I've repaired a couple of my adapters. In the case of mine the wires were intermittently open right at the strain relief where the wires enter the adapter. I carefully sliced open the strain relief, found where the wire break was, spliced/soldered the wire back together, used heatshrink tubing for insulation and strain relief. 99% of adapter failures are right at where the wire enters the adapter and not inside.

Yes, that's exactly where I believe the issue is. I understand your approach. I was literaly going to solder a new cable on to the PC board inside. I'll take you approach if no one chimes in with some "magic".

A lot ... if not most ... wall warts are ultrasonically welded. The only way to open them up is cut/break.

They can sometimes be opened without destroying them, but it takes a bit of luck. I do this quite a bit and have successfully disassembled and reassembled several plastic-welded cases.

Put it on a soft but firm surface - a carpeted floor works well, you could also cup it in your hand if you trust yourself with a hammer. Gently whack with a hammer around the seam between the two halves. Work your way right around the seam. The idea is to crack the seam, but leave the rest of the case intact.

Defining a "gentle whack" - it takes more force than you might think so don't hold back. However, it's a balancing act between hard enough and too hard.
