Can only find a live version on the tube, but that one is pure Pedulla Buzz and a bit of chorus, maybe.

That's the signature sound of Pino Palladino playing a fretless. I haven't heard the song recently, but I don't think there was much more than chorus in the actual bass sound. A very good example of the sound coming from the player more so than the gear. There are plenty of keyboard parts in the background, though. It was the '80s after all.

[edit] Pino played fretless P-basses, BTW.

Fretless MusicMan Stingray, actually.

I'm no expert, but AFAIK he used a fretless P in the earlier days of that particular style, and a fretless Ray with a Modulus neck in the later days.

This is him with Gary Numan in 1982 - before he really became in-demand for that sound. Stingray in that video. There's a "Top Of The Pops" appearance on YouTube for the same single where he appears to be playing the same bass. All the Paul Young stuff I remember he was playing a sunburst Stingray with a stock neck - again I'd assume it's the same one.

I don't think I've ever seen him with a fretless P. I know he's playing P basses now, but then he never plays fretless these days.

As long as we are celebrating Pino's fretless tone, here's a couple other favorites:

I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down (with an OC-2)

Truco (with Dominic Miller & Manu Kache)

Dig the groove around 1:36

Hmm... it's one of those things I had read multiple places some time back when I first took an interest in Pino; however I just spent some time on Google and can't find one single reference to him playing a fretless P. Same goes for the Modulus neck deal- I swear I read it all over the place a while back, but now there's nothing. So there we have it- either my memory is failing me again, or I took the word of a bunch of fools at some point.

Just looked at that link posted above, lists his gear which includes a '79 Stingray fretless - I'm guessing that's the one. Apparently he picked it up during his first tour of the USA with Jools Holland's band.

I have to say I've got a fretless 'Ray myself and an OC-2 and they are not the best of friends - I don't know how he got it to track reliably when he was picking down by the bridge like that. If I ever bump into him, that'll be the first thing I ask him.
