Anybody Using MXR DI+

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

I recently purchased Dunlop's MXR DI + and I was wondering what the Talkbass.com community's general outlook on this little gadget was. I have only had it a few days and have used it to record once... I have some complaints but I wanted to see what you all think first.

I like mine. The only complaint I have is that I get noise when I run it to lower quality boards and/or soundmend try to send phantom power my way. At that point the ground lift just switches who gets the noise. There's never a problem if a place has quality in house sound.

I had the Sansamp, the MXR and the Sadowsky all at the same time, and compared one another until I decided on which one to keep. Ultimately I preferred the Sadowsky, but I really liked the MXR (much more than the Sansamp). My biggest gripes were about the quality of the overdrive (it just didn't do anything for me in higher gain modes). Otherwise, I think it's a pretty sweet DI.

Just use the clean side and get a different dirt pedal? I have a Bass Big Muff, PD7 and VT Bass.

^^^ I agree. That's why I went with the Sadowsky and a FullDrive Mosfet.

Nick Greer makes the Relic Drive, how do NG pedals sound on bass? I have the BBM for fuzz but there are times when I just want sizzling overdrive-distortion!

I am trying to construct my signature-sound which I want to be original - ha... I'm sure everyone in talkbass.com is saying the same thing.

If the MXR DI had a mid sweep it would be even more of a threat than it is now.

I really liked it's sound, but currently am opting for just a simple small MXR 6-band pedal on my pedaltrain mini to save space because I'm using a Valvedrive in an almost clean setting as my general PreAmp. If I went back away from that I'd definitely go MXR DI, or ToneHammer myself.

Hmm, I'm liking this demo of it.

Then again, I'm a sucker for Bobby Vega.

Wow, I'm surprised by that demo. They actually showed what the pedal can do rather than turning distortion on 11 and wankfesting it and calling it a demo.

IMHO the pedal has a way fuller sound than what they used and showed there, but the EQ on it is very versatile and can do a lot depending on your preferences.

I'll buy your MXR if you don't like it... had one .. should have kept it.

I don't use distortion.

I really like the EQ and "Color" feature, which adds warmth and harmonic overtones. It was just that the distortion feature which happens to occupy 4 of the 8 knobs was less than satisfying. However, the Sansamp XXL Bass Edition looks promising. Perhaps I will just find a decent distortion pedal and send a clean signal to it.

The Digitech Bass Driver is pretty decent for that sort of thing.

In my search for a bass overdrive I tested many and owned a few pedals. The ones I owned:

Behringer bass overdrive BOD100: I actually owned this. But... don't! No good. I do like some behringer pedals, the TO800 guitar overdrive is actually pretty decent, but not this one.

Boss ODB-3: Nah! only does extreme sizzling distortion, but not a pleasant one (in my opinion, and in my hands). You CAN get a couple of useable sounds, but not a versatile pedal.

Digitech Bass Driver: It does the sound I liked from the ODB-3, plus many others. You can actually get some milder overdrive sounds as well as sizzling heavy stuff ala Nightwish. This is one pedal I kept, although I don't use it so much these days (I don't play in a metal band).

Digitech Bad Monkey: a guitar overdrive that works FANTASTIC on bass. Great for mild overdrive. Really nice.

Ibanez PH-7, Phat Head: This one doesn't have a blend control, but the sound is alright, keeps bass definition pretty well. 3 modes: clean, overdrive and distortion, plus an "attack" switch wich adds some high end grit. I love this one on "clean" plus the attack... it just sounds dirty, raspy, but keeps all the definition. Not high gain at all, but very "metal". The overdrive and distortion ones go from relatively mild gain to quite high fuzzy gain. Add "attack" to taste. This is a good metal medal too, but I wouldn't personally sue it as a main pedal, rather as a second "flavour".

MXR M80 Bass DI+: Great versatile pedal, initially I only used it as a level boost/preamp thingy, but the distortion channel gets you some pretty good sounds, from soft overdrive (although not as nice as the Bad Monkey) to heavy distortion. The trick is to blend it properly with the dry sound... that makes the different between "urgh" and "yeah!" sounds, in my opinion.

If I were going to have only one pedal, the MXR would be the one. In fact, it's the only one permanently in my chain of FX. Then, depending one what I play, I may add others. Typically the Bad Monkey for milder fat overdrive, or the Bass Driver for more metal situations. I still like the Ibanez, and I kept it becaue it's got a few great sounds... but it's very noisy, lots of hiss... so I would use another pedal if it can get me close to the sound I'm after, preferentially over the Ibanez.

MXR DI was good, but I sold it after buying a SansAmp BDDI. The clean sound of the MXR was better in fact, but the distortion was too fuzzy for me. I love the drive SansAmp gives. The soundmen love it as a DI, so I'm fine...
