Anyone know what effect/effects?

Watching SNL this past week and i was digging this bass players tone and growl he would have during the intro and later when Jay- Z came out. Anyone know what effects he is using?

Heres the video on Hulu.

Sounds like a combo between keys, bass and guitar to me.......SO the resultant sound is coming from 3 combined instruments (I agree with vegas532 below, it's clean)

I was just watching that and noticed that tone---it was so sick. I was thinking it had to be some kind of synth, but I have no idea which one.

Clean bass tone, no effects.

Bright strings, slight boost in the mids and treble. Brings out the snarl a bit.

I'm skeptical of you guys saying no effects...I hear an octave in there...

reeeeeallly sounds like an octaver in there. you can hear it early on too. It's clean but still clearly sounds like an octave shift

Since I'm on a Macbook (crappy speakers), I listened again with a good set of headphones and yes, it's an octaver. Sounds like an EBS Octabass to me.

That's Adam Blackstone and he uses an EBS Octabass, what a tone and player!

Adam Blackstone! Thank you cabcreaser! What's even cooler is this guy lists his gear on his site listed above.
