Anyone running just direct with occasional OD added?

Sign in to disble this ad
Have only played bass since last fall, and most of this time I've been basically running a DI box out to the house system and to my own PA to monitor myself. Occasionally I'd add an OD sound.

Does anyone else do this? It seems to work, but I'm making changes to my setup and would like your feedback.

Thx,
-- Joe

You're running your signal path pre-DI. that's smart. Active bass with EQ? What changes are you making to your setup?

Yes sir! If the PA is good enough, I run a Line 6 POD X3 Live directly to FOH. I use in-ears to hear myself. I still prefer a cab to hear and feel myself, but for a long trip to a gig, it makes travel and load in/out a breeze.

For my first few months, I was running...

Ibanez SR300 > Digitech RP1000 > QSC K12 > house

I found a couple of good Digitech amp models, but ended up liking the punch and tone of direct better. Still liked the RP1000 for DI, tuner, volume control, and occasional fx.

I just bought a Sansamp VT Bass and an EXH Bass Big Muff. So I'm thinking I might go .....

Ibanez SR 300, active EQ > EHX Bass Big Muff > SansAmp VT Bass > Damage Control Glass Nexus > QSC K12 >

...with really everything off most of the time except the bass and PA.

For occasional OD, I'd add in growl from the VT Bass. Add the Muff for the rare distortion.

Add the Glass Nexus for subtle chorus or phaser sometimes.

Part of my goal is to keep things fairly simple. I don't plan on tweaking settings during performances. When the VT Bass Deluxe comes on the market, I might go for that.

Thanks,
-- Joe

Last Friday at practice I ran my modded VT bass w/DI into the PA and into the effect return of the amp with just a bit of grit dialed into the VT bass. Sounded great. I don't really need anything else besides that.
