Anyone use BOSS DS-1?

I've been experimenting with a couple different pedals to get a sweet distortion sound, and I have 4 at my disposal.

Russian Big Muff, Boss Ds-1, Boss Heavy Metal, and Boss Oc-2.

The octave doesnt really sound that great to help with distortion, so that doesnt count. The big muff sounds pretty good, but something seems missing. The heavy metal is just completely rediculous, I dont even know what I can do with that. And the ds-1 gets a pretty good clean distortion.

Does anyone use this pedal or have any tips? Maybe link it with the Big Muff?

BTW Im not talking about the penny pedal mod, just the regular ds-1.

I have a regular DS-1 and found it made the sound way to thin to ever really be heard in the mix without a good volume crank behind it. The HM-2 actually does a great job of boosting lows although it doesn't have the biting distortion that I think your looking for.

Have you tried them in a band context?

i use a boss geb-7 in the same loop as my ds-1, i think i have the distortion turned all the way up, and tone all the way down.

My band and I keep hearing a lot of bassists use the regular big muff, so we thought we'd test it out last night with me. The thing is, I use a different amp for practice than I do for gigging, and its pretty distorted as it is. I took it home to mess with on my 8x10, and it sounds sweet, but I havent tried it with that amp and the band. I have the ds-1 here too and I tried it out by myself and it sounds ok. I've tried the hm-2 with the band and its just too much. I think Im leaning towards the big muff for a show on saturday.

Here is the song that I really only would use it for:

Face Down Blues @ about 5:15
