Anyone use an EQ before there Envelope Filter?

Sign in to disble this ad
I read an interview with Mike Gordon that said he uses a graphic EQ before his envelope filter to get it just right. There are a lot of times when the low end of the filter is unmanageable. I would rather not use a compressor. I'm primarily using the EBS IQ, but sometimes I switch on the Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer's filter. It would be nice if Chunk could throw an EQ into the OS (software update, perhaps?). Any ideas to tweak a filter to it's sweet spot?

Feeding a filter with a pretty hot signal helps, I run a Barber Linden eq in front of mine, and also a couple of overdrives, and a clean boost. Best filter sounds are done with some dist or fuzz in front.

Ran dirt in front, but never an EQ before. Gotta try that this weekend when I get the chance.

IMO the benefit of running an EQ in front would not be to tame the low end, but rather to ensure that the frequency range that will best trigger the filter is emphasized on the way in. If you want to manage the resonant peak of the filter, you need to put the EQ or limiter after it (for best results).

I often run my POG into my filter and then use the two band eq on my X-Blender after to control the peak-frequencies.

Not quite what you're asking, but almost.
