Anyone use an EQ pedal?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently picked one up a Boss Bass EQ (GEB-7) to solve a problem I've had.

I was able to dial in my awesomest tone ever (basically using the Sansamp BDDI in the FX loop, with another equally gnarly complementary tone on the head), which sounds killer and articulate in the low B range.

However, the tone comes out a bit bright and thin when I do tapping lines on the high range. I am hoping (havent experimented much) that the EQ will let me round out my tone in the high register.

Anyone ever do anything like this, or run an EQ pedal? I just almost feel like it's an extra device, but I dont want to otherwise alter my basic tone.

I used to have a Boss GEB-7, but currently now just use an MXR 6-band simply because it's smaller on my PedalTrain Mini. I use it to tweak some of the differences between my basses. Small EQ tweaks rather than building my core tone.

The GEB-7 (or any EQ) is good tool. I had the old Doo-Doo brown GEB-7 and used it to add some extra EQ to a lousy keyboard amp. It won't do everything, but it should give you extra tone shaping that the BDDI and M/B 400 doesn't have. It can help for slap tones with the right massaging of the EQ, and can be there if you don't want to readjust the BDDI and the preamp on your amp. Just stomp it for your slap passages and turn it off when your done.

I thought that pedal was noisy. But graphic eqs are great.
You're deffinately on the right track to fixing your 'issue'
I would try different ones out.

I did for a while. They just aren't for me. I prefer a simple preamp.

I used to have an MXR M-108. I'd look at it as well; it might be able to fix your problem. It has a weird power requirement so you won't be able to daisy chain it, though.

I wish effects makes would get together and decide on a power requirement and make it global - like 19" racks, XLR, 1/4" cables, etc.

I love my GEB-7, it can really fill out your tone.

I use the EHX Knockout. It makes my bass sound amazing. The presence and the tone it gives is just awesome. I works with filters to sculpt the highs and lows and has a blend knob also. I could not recommend it more.

We saw how that turned out for the 9V XO BMS.

i dial in my eq pedal (mxr 10 band) to get more edge. this makes a HUGE difference for going to slap lines, and itll also make synths and filters respond better, because i boost the highs and lows.

i use my sansamp bddi to gut all my highs, boost the lows a lot, and for some warmth.

my bass teacher (glenn letsch [plug: on tour with robin trower now, so go see them!]) told me to keep both of my bass (stingray, 2 band eq) eq set at about 9 out of 10, if you think of your bass eq that way. between these three combinations, i can really cover a lot of ground.

then theres the rest of the sounds, but thats not what this thread is about...

I use 2 GEB-7s at the moment. My bass has a great mid growl that I like for most stuff but occasionally use an EQ to scoop my sound for some stuff. The second is in my bass synth/filter loop to adjust the volume and tone.

I use it to cut high frequencies when playing parts that need that all bottom sound...

Where are you putting your EQ pedals in the signal chain?

Are any of you inserting your EQ pedals in your amp's effects loop?

If you're running an EQ pedals on yoour pedalboard, are you putting it before or after your compressor?

Just to add to the confusion,...don't forget to look into Parametric EQ's as well.

i put my eq pedal first. always. no exceptions ever.

my compressor is in my rack (though i may mess around with the maxon one when i have cash to burn). i run a three channel parallel looper (yeah, ive said this a bunch. broken record. sorry), and the dbx 160a still keeps things from getting out of hand (how anyone can use a murf without a compressor is beyong me. it should have one built in. oh crap, now i have more custom mod ideas...).

i never have used an effects loop. i still have my eden navigator, but no longer use it, so i have no effects loop. i couldnt care less.

I use a Demeter BEQ pedal. Basically their on-borad 3 band pre-amp in a stomp box.
Don't use it a lot, but when I know I need to get in and out of some quick tone changes where I can't reach down and fiddle with the pre on my bass.
