Anyone use phasers for slapping?

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't have room for a big phaser so I was wondering if something like the MXR 90 and its copies can do the slow envelope filtery sweep I am looking to use for repetitive or percussive lines.

Thanks

phaser and envelope filter are two totally different effects. if u want a envelope filter-esque sound in a small pedal, look into the electro harmonix nano bass balls pedal.

The slow filtery sweep of the bass balls is close to what I'm after but I want the more subtle unobtrusiveness of a phaser. Plus IME BB don't work too great with a Stingray.

Unobtrusiveness...?

I use a phaser for slap, and it sounds really good if you get the tempo/rate right. I prefer an envelope filter or a wah wah though. That said, phaser >> flanger is the best slap tone I've ever come across.

Haven't you seen the Larry Graham pedal demo?

Yeah that's the sound I'm hearing. A phaser where the rate is set to compliment the tempo with a nice subtle swoosh.

It's not small, but the Pigtronix EP-1 is an envelope phaser. Exactly the sound you're after. Check it out and see what you're looking for.

I would LOVE to get an EP-1 but it won't fit on my board.

MXR Script Phase 90 SOUNDCLIPS

Second soundclip. That's basically what a phase 90 sounds like when you're thumping and plucking.

I had alot of trouble putting my board together. It went through several set ups before I felt I was finished. As it happens, I wound up with a couple of pedals beside my board. They go in the provided loop, so even though my aim was total self containment, it worked out slightly larger. So now I've got two pedals on the floor, right next to my board, but I've got everything I need, (or, want), and it works fine. Might be just what the Dr ordered for you, as well.

Assgoblin thanks. That's almost exactly what I have in mind (just with less depth).

In my experience with it the Phase 100 works great with bass, and gives you some options with the depth.

I prefer my Phase 90 over my Sovtek Small Stone, but the SS offers more control over the sound and "swoosh" rate.

I ended up with a Small Stone.

The MXR sounded too full for me.

Good choice!

On a side note... I normally don't slap with a phaser. I'm not too great at slapping to begin with. However... when I had the opportunity to try out the EHX Polyphase a few weeks back, I was overtaken by the sudden urge to funk out with some slap bass playing! The same could be said for my Strat-wielding buddy, who was as impressed as I was with the envelope-triggered phasing the Polyphase offered.

I slap through my Psilocybe a lot. I consider it to be a crucial element to my tone for funky songs. I especially dig it alongside the Discumbobulator.
