Anyone use tube screamer with solid state amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
I use a Green Rhino with a GK 700 RB II and it sounds great to me. However, I just remembered that a lot of people think that tube screamer can only sound good with a tube amp.
I get that Jesus Lizardish clanky high midly bass sound with it and can tap on a bit of dirt or quite a lot of dirt.
Anyone else defies logic and screams tubes that are not there?

I don't like a TS through tubes or ss on bass. To me, it just lacks everything...

Green Rhino has a 100Hz boost knob and a curve knob that softens the highs. Maybe you'd like it? it's not your typical tube screamer and has a character of its own.

There are no rules in tone and "sound good" can mean just about anything to anyone!

That said, it may be common for the setup you describe to sound unpleasant to many, but that doesn't mean it can't sound amazing to you and many others!

The Green Rhino, to my ears, is superior to a standard Tubescreamer anyhow. The Only "Tubescreamer" I've ever liked, in fact, was a Keeley Baked Mod.

I think the new IBANEZ bass tube screamer sounds awesome! It has separate bass/treble controls and a mix control, for a slight overdrive tone to full distortion I think it sounds great with my tube or solid state amps.

The Green Rhino is NO JOKE on bass!!! Didn't turn out to be a sound I needed, but it was DEFINITELY a sound I liked!!!

I have always wondered why the occasional person tried a standard TS on a bass. I hooked my guitarists up through my rig and it was very unpleasant.

guitarist used a TS to slam the from end of their tube amp with a ton more manageable gain and a nice bit of OD. From what I can tell, it is in an completely different application than what bassists used OD pedals.

True, but the new Tube screamer bass is not the guitar version...

I borrowed a TS9 with the keeley mod and it sounded pretty good, but found that it still lacked bottom end. The TS bass version is probably the way you want to go.

I use a Bad Monkey, which I believe is TS clone, with an added bass and treble knob. Sounds pretty dark to me, but I'm using it for mild OD. Used it with Eden, Mesa, and Genz Benz SS head (although all are actually hybrids with tubes in their pre-amps). It's ok, serviceable, but not terribly exciting. I'm considering an OD upgrade when I have more funds in the future.

I have a Tube Screamer clone made by Janis @ Jam Pedals that just kills through my LMii, as well as my Walkabout. I don't lose any low end and it goes from b-15 fatness, all the way to a fuzz-esque tone with the hi-gain switch. Love it.

Zombie-ish thread, but...
The TS9B is awesome with an Eden amp! Just a great combination, I am finding.

The Turbo Tube Screamer works nice on bass. In the Turbo setting there is very little loss of low end.

I use a bass-modded bad monkey from time to time and when I do, I actually use it for light grit, not driving my amp harder (I do play through a tube amp). With a ton of extra bass added, it's got this wonderful woolly texture bristling out below that usual mid hump--very different from the tightness guitar players expect it to add when used as a boost.

I must say that using the TS9B either thru my B7K, VTD, BDDI, or just clean thru my SS type Proeft 3.3 head does warm up or fuzz up the signal. It gets a little muddy, but its fun. I don't think it sounds perfectly uneffected with the blend knob, but its still a great pedal.

I plan on getting a tube, well hybrid Krank D800 in a few weeks, to see if the TS9B sounds better with tubes to push it.

Back when I had an ancient Kustom III bass head, I used a Bad Monkey with it to play Ace of Spades. I liked how it sounded.

I've played Ibanez TS808 (JRC4558D Maxon chip) through my tube head on tour, about ten gigs. It was really nice, with maximum gain and tone on pedal and minimum tone on bass it gave some massive fuzzy sounds (I play with always on drive, so I didn't feel any low end lack). However, after the tour I tried it during rehearsals with hybrid ampeg svt-6 and it was unbelievable bad -dying sustain, lack of gain and low end, the bass tone was nearly buried in the mix
