Just picked up a used DS-1 for $20.00 and ordered the Monty Allums' tri gain rectifier mod kit.

I’ll let you know what I think when it’s finished.
If it doesn’t float my boat I’ll give it to my son who plays guitar.

I had an Analog Man modded DS-1 for awhile and it didn't work very well for bass. Still lost too much low end and was too buzzy sounding. Even for guitar, my guitar playing friends found it to be a little over the top. Many still love this pedal though, even in its stock form.

I borrowed one from my guitar player, I played for about 10 minutes and gave it back to him, I was unhappy with the sound, the sound was too aggressive and there was a consistent lack of low end.

I got the Monty Allums DS-1 mod kit Friday.
It took an hour from start to finish to complete.

The mod does allow the low end through, and that nasty nasal buzz is gone.
The distortion is much smoother through out it’s range.
It will now go from an overdrive to full distortion.
To me it sounded best when the switch in the open position, followed by the led. I think I may try a 1n34A ge diode in the other to see if I like it better.
I also think it still sounds best with the tone rolled back below 12:00 o’clock but I like dark.

I’m thinking of playing around with modding an MT-2 Metal Zone and ODB-3 next.

I've had just about every keeley product made....still have a few. The DS-1 Ultra is KILLER for guitar, but for me it didn't do too much for the bass. I tried it several different ways as well as times and I wasn't too pleased.
It depend on what kind of tone you are after. I wanted a slight pushed sound. I wanted the sound to have wiskers. I couldn't get it with this pedal. I came close with the Keeley SD-1 though.
