Anyone using a BOSS ODB-3 with success?

Sign in to disble this ad
This unit gets bagged a lot on this forum but this clip has some great sounds as far as I'm concerned...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7rZWOvG7jA

I like it as it has blend and if I can achieve sounds like the clip (the first is my fav) will be stoked.
My other areas of interest are th Ibanez PD-7 or Ashdown Drive plus for an aggressive always on sound with no bottom end loss.
Opinions are always welcome.

Oh.....I like that! Been thinking about trying some effects pedals for bass and that sounds like a strong possibility.

I use one! It is pretty good until the gain gets dialed above noon and then it gets too fuzzy for my liking. What I love about it is the EQ section. It helps retain the low end and even gives it a boost if you want.

That guy demo-ing the odb3 is a sick bassist. He can prolly make squiers sound like sadowsky if hes paid to do so.

It could just be a combination of steel strings, his bass' preamp, and his aggressive technique, but I could never make my ODB-3 sound like this.

I had one. Sold it to get a Big Muff Pi. Probably a mistake. People used to praise the Big Muff Pi, now it's getting bashed. I should have kept the BOSS. It kept GREAT low end with distortion. If you're thinking about it, I'd get it. It's reliable also. Damn, maybe I'll have to re-buy it instead of the Bigg Muff

I agree with this. My first pedal for my bass was the OBD-3 because I wanted some distortion or a little bit of overdrive. This thing was horrible for what I wanted. Was too fuzzy. I tinkered with this thing for 2 hours and could never get a sound I liked with it.
Sold it on craigslist a week later. Ordered a Sansamp BDDI and within 10 minutes I had the distortion I'd been looking for for several years.

It all depends on you're looking for. TRY to try it out before you buy it. I thought it would be the answer to what I was looking for because I'd never been disappointed with Boss's pedals from my guitar days....But I could not like this pedal if you paid me to. Try it out first.

I have one, but never really learned to love it. It has sat unused ever since I bought my Tech-21 VT pedal. The Boss is OK for flat-out distortion, but imho the VT is much warmer, has a far more usable range of gritty tones (especially at lower distortion settings), and just plain works better for me.

I had one and if it weren't so industrial sounding, I'd still use it. It's not a bad pedal itself, it just wasn't working for me.

I still pull one out every so often. No real need for it on my pedalboard though. I actually like it better for guitar. I know, I know, but...

King Buzzo may not look like he knows whats going on, but the 20 some odd records hes released say otherwise & he agrees with me

It never even crossed my mind to try mine with my guitars - I'll give it a shot! I hate gear that sits unused on a shelf...

It was on my main board for years because i hadn't found anything better, last year went a bit pedal crazy and found an alternative so now it's the fuzz on my synth board.

It's really quite a nice pedal, especially set with the gain about noon and the blend slightly favouring the dry side. Set Bass to boost just past 1 or so and set your High to around noon and you've got a nice, powerful sound. Used one live from about 3/4 years with a Jazz and a Thunderbird, always sounded monstrous and really given my three-piece a bit of oomph when needed. Has now bene replaced by a Fulltone Bass Drive, but there's no way I'm selling it - too useful in the studio as a 2 band eq and for extra kick when combined with a fuzz.
