Aphex Exciter/optical big bottom..what's the deal, how's the tone?

I remember using the aural exciter during mixdowns, for recording,
But how is this unit for bass rigs?..
Live, does it mess with the purity or "natural" quality of your tone?..
I hear good things..

I love good tone,
tight, strong low end..and clean, pure mids.. I don't like a processed or over eq'ed tone..
This seemed interesting to me though...

Any good or bad feedback from users?
