Ok, I wrote to Aphex less than one hour ago, and I've already heard back! "Pati Potter" wrote me, here's the comments ...

"Brian, thank you for your wonderful comments on our Aphex products.

Regarding the Xciter Pedal - yes we have currently discontinued the sales of the Xciter and Punch Factory Pedal. Musician's Friend currently has the remaining inventory at close out prices.

We currently do not have plans for new models to replace them in the near future, but we are always looking for markets and opportunities where our award winning technologies can benefit the musician and pro!

The rack mount EXCITER module, which will still be available, is a two channel version of our current version of the technology that was in the Xciter Pedal!

I have sent your email over to our Tech Dept to answer the rest of your email.

Again thank you for being a faithful customer."

I checked over at Musicians Friends and the Xciter is still listed for $199 from what I can tell. So "closeout prices" ... hmmm .. not so much. But if you guys want one y'better be getting after it! I did find some at $139/free shipping (see post above this one).

If MF starts giving them away at <$100 as has been sugested by another poster here in this thread, I'll be all over it like a chicken on a junebug!

I know for sure that I'll be pickup up another rack Exciter to back up my 8 year old 204. I can still find 204s on Ebay for around $250 or so though. Good stuff, Maynard.

I'm actually glad to hear about the MF blowout--not out of any spite toward Aphex, as I do admire some of their rack products--but because people have been riding me to review the alien-tank version of the Opto-Stomp, so for many months I've been "this close" to spending $140 or more on one just for the review. I would hate to have spent that and then seen them disco'd and blown out before I had a chance to re-sell it.

Do you have book cases full of compressors?

If you do, can I see a pic!

I've traded two more emails with "Jace" from technical support at Aphex since that first response from Pati earlier. He eased my mind by telling me that the newer rack unit (the Exciter) is pretty much the same as the 204, which was discontinued and replaced with the Exciter rack unit. That's great news because the 204 is such an outstanding unit.

I was just using it minutes ago. I ran my bass straight out into a $30 ART mic preamp (to get the input impedance in a good place) then straight into the 204, then out of that directly into the Mackie FR1400i power amp, then into my cabs. It would be very easy to use the Aphex as one's preamp all by itself! It worked great in that capacity.

My point is that the Xciter pedal is as good sounding and as versatile as the 204, so one could actually get away with running their bass into the Xciter and directly into a mixer or recording interface and see EXCELLENT results. Keeping in mind the Xciter has such outstanding input impedance specs you could easily plug directly into it and come directly out into a power amp, mixer, or audio interface.

I guess that's why they call that ability "direct box". That Xciter will make an excellent DI.

Input impedance is one important factor, but it is not the whole story. Equally important are output gain and whether the output is balanced. Which one of those three is "most important" depends on specific application.

I wonder how many of these will end up on Ebay for $149 or so after the sale ends?
