Arranging my board for Biamping: So many options.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys the new amp came this morning which is most exciting and i figured since i know have 2 amps i may as well try this biamping thing since i use alot of distortion

This is my board currently

and here are some of the ideas i had to arrange it for biamping. The blue signal is the clean path using the valve drive as a pre amp into my old harke head and eden 2x15. the red is the dirty path into the ashdown head and 2x10 and old harke 4x10. The ls-2 is set to (a+b Mix)/bypass and acts as a master mute

In the first option i leave the ashdown head on drive and use the guv to overdrive it and the tuner to mute it. i can set the vd to mute the clean signal.

The 2nd is similar but takes the vd out before the loop to give me master tone controls over both signal paths

the 3rd takes the tuner right out of the signal path and is accessed via the ls-2 as it's not trye bypass. This means i'd have to leave the head on clean and i don't have the footswitch cos they're not in australia yet

EDIT: forgot to ask (what an idiot) Which way would be best and why?

My advice is to have it routed so you can tune muted. It's also very helpful having a one button global mute with complicated setups like this. You'd be surprised how easy it is to forget reactivating one of the lines and causing a disaster for the FOH.

I just got an LS-2 and use it in the effects loop of my GK amp with a Sansamp RPM blended into it, running in a+b mix/bypass for global mute. This amp drives a 2x10 and I cut the low end out of the signal a little bit. Since my uneffected signal inputs into both preamps of that rig, I jump from the tuner out on the GK into the input of my 1x15 so the bottom has no drive at all and I cut all frequencies above 250 hz. Set my volume with the 2x10 only and bring up the 115 to fill it in. More than you asked for in your question though!

I did a similar but more complex setup but I used an A/B/Y box so I could switch between amps and chains and have both together, it is very important to have the tuner before the LS-2 so that you can mute both amps.

The LS-2 is great for amp switching but due to it's single switch it is annoying to do A/B/Y it is best at A/B, Line/A, Line/B, Y

Now depending on your setup as I was using 2 amps and switched between them one 100% effects, 1 clean, boost available to both, tuner available to both and I could switch them on together. I ended up just using the clean the sound and adding in the effects here and there so if you are doing similar you need to run the output of the LS-2 into the amin amp and then one of the loops to the other amp so you can do On/Off which should just toggle the 2nd amp in and out leaving the clean a constant.

Hope this makes sense
