Art Levelar to tame a Mini Q-tron?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking into compressors right now, partially because I want a little smoother tone and as a means to make my mini Q-tron more usable. I was interested in the Art Levelar, which is solidly within my price range, and was wondering if it would do the trick with the Q-tron's volume spike. I was also looking at the Electronix submarine, which though not a compressor, seemed like it could smooth out drives and mellow the q-tron out with its gain control.

I would steer you away from both of those for that purpose. The Levelar's compression is gentle, and you need something that can provide more limiting. The Submarine is a booster circuit, it will make your problem far, far worse. You can turn the volume down with the Gain control, but then all of your notes that aren't spiking will be too quiet.

I prescribe a used Alesis Micro Limiter or a used Guyatone BL2, they typically sell for under $50.

Thanks Bongo. So, damn, I don't have a straight up excuse to buy a Submarine, but I'm sure I'll end up with one soon. In the meantime, I've had good experience with the bite size Guyatone's, so I'll check out the Bl-2.
