art tube or radial

I have read so many threads covering these different boxes. Some were about DI, and some were about warming up a signal before ones amp. I am in the latter camp, but need DI as well. Could anyone elaborate on the tone difference between the two? With that asked, I did buy the art, and I like the sound it produces before my amp, but it died in about 4 uses. I realize it has a tube, but also understand that the way it is built it is likely not really getting much tone from that tube, so I wondered if the radial's circuitry would provide the same kind of "warming" or "smoothing" effect to a solid state amp.
Thanks to everyone!!
