Hello fuzz fans! I need some help in identifying the fuzz used in the following song(s): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEHVMiGEh4w
It sounds like "She's Got a Hold on Me" could possibly be a B:Assmaster but I can't really get my silicon assmaster to sound that way, the assmaster seems more sputtery, IME.
Check out Dan Auerbach's solo album, if you are into blues rock you may really enjoy it, not to mention that there is plenty of bass fuzz all over the album. Listen to the song "Real Desire". I don't have a link directly to the song but the song can be found on his myspace page http://www.myspace.com/danauerbachmusic and it usually comes up on iLike if you just Google "Dan Auerbach Real Desire". I could be off but I think it was probably recorded with a Depth Charge, take a listen and let me know! (Granted, I'm cheating a little because I know the bassist during Dan's solo tour used a Depth Charge live. But I think it is highly possible that a Depth Charge was used on the album).
And just for shiggles: Which of the two recorded fuzzes do you like best. We'll call "She's Got a Hold On Me" Fuzz 1 and "Real Desire" Fuzz 2. |

Also, Hacienda sounds great! I'm going to check them out!

| | | | Valerus, Hacienda is from Texas! They came to my attention because they were Dan Auerbach's backing band during his solo tour.
I like Hacienda's fuzz sound and if it is a Tone Bender I'm going to have to look into getting one. I do prefer the sound of Dan Auerbach fuzz over Hacienda's fuzz sound but they are so different that I can see the need to have both! |

I think the fuzzes in each track were appropriate to the song--the Hacienda one was more intensely fuzzy, but the mix had open room for that; the Auerbach one was more subtle, which meant the bassist could still be heard in the less-open mix. |

And yeah if it is a Tonebender, I will buy one right now. |

| | | | I sold my assmaster today, it was my second one and I just could not get a sound out of it that works for me. I love my Depth Charge and it suits my needs perfectly. But now I have some cash so I can either hang on to it or look into another fuzz...
FreaqyFrequency, the entire album is great. And if you haven't already heard the Black Keys you should check them out. |

the fuzz in the Hacienda song sounds like it could be gotten through an MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz... |

You have a Depth Charge - how's that compare to what's being played in the clips? more or less aggressive? I was thinking of the DC as my next fuzz.

| | | I'm still unsure about whether the fuzz in the Hacienda song is a tonebender, the only tonebender clip I can find is of the Bass Tonebender on YouTube and while it certainly sounds like a possibility I'm not completely sure.
I can play along to Dan Auerbach's album perfectly with the Depth Charge, which is one of the things that leads me to believe that the DC was used on the album. I love the Depth Charge and when I saw all the fuss about the B:Assmaster I got the Ge one thinking it would be an upgrade from my beloved DC, but I didn't care for it. I figured there was something wrong with me so I got the Si Assmaster and I still didn't like it. I kept reading about how the DC is not a "true" Brassmaster copy and that the Malekko was much closer to the real thing, if that's the case than I guess I just don't like the Brassmaster. |

Maybe that means the recordings were heavily EQ'd or otherwise colored and shaped; maybe that means it wasn't really a Brassmaster in the old recordings I'm thinking of; maybe something else, I don't know.
Tangent: I happened to go to a record store today because I had a 20% off coupon, and hot dang they had a Hacienda CD in the used section! It's the self-titled one. Cool stuff, if a bit "crude", and no fuzz on the bass unfortunately. |

| | | | Bongo, I wonder that you may have picked up their demo because as far as I know they only have a demo and an album titled "Loud is the Night", they also have an album coming out in April called "Big Red & Barbacoa". Either way, that's cool that you picked that up! |

In regards to the fuzz, I've played a few shows with these guys and I'm pretty sure that Rene never used one. He did have a TS9 or some overdrive pedal, and played through an old '59 fender bassman. I'll have to ask him about what he used on that song next time I see him. |
