auto-wah for "No Quarter" sound

Sign in to disble this ad
I do this thing with a crybaby, I step up and down really rapidly on it, while playing chords and stuff, it kinda emulates the Zep's,"No Quarter" leslie/wurlitzer sound..

Is there an auto wah,or very intense Rotary or similar effect
that will go,"wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah" continuously. when I sustain a note?

it has to be set fairly quickly,too..
thnx.

it's a little stronger than just a leslie, more intense, like a repeating wah, if I set the tone control really warm, it sounds dead-on like that Wurlitzer..up to now it's worked fine with the pedal, but it takes alot of energy and I just wondered how it would sound if it was automated instead of foot controlled.

+1 for vibrato.

Off topic:
Funny you mention that song , I'm working on it this week.
I made an interesting patch on the VB99 for that particular song. I do the kbd part with the top three strings and the Moog part with the lower two.
I use both Leslie/vibrato/ gtr amp to recreate the kbd part.

The EHX Wiggler has a Wurlitzer mode. I had a Wiggler for a short while, but was more interested in the Leslie and univibe-esque modes at the time. So I couldn't tell you how close it was.

I managed to achieve that sound for the most part with an EHX The Worm. It has a few settings including auto-wah and tremolo. They are the cheapest thing you can get for that sound without sounding like garbage thru bass, bout $100. I recommend it.

Just an idea--would one of those Crybaby-bodied Phase 90's do the trick?

The only modulation pedal I own is a E-H small stone(phase) and it does a pretty good simulation of that sound. I would think the MXR would do a similar thing.

Thanx, not really a phaser I'm after. It's something more intense, more of a dark, rapidly repeating wah filter.

Let's say I hit a single, sustained note..
I don't want it to go,"Wow" or " meow" like an envelope filter,
I'm looking for more like,
"wow-wow-wow-wow-wow-wow-wow"
A wah that repeats. In a small pedal.

It's kind of a weird technique, I wiggle the crybaby pedal really quickly,
almost shaking it, I call it my"nervous foot" technique..
But I keep the pedal towards the
back, darker frequencies only..
It kind of warbles.
If u do it quickly enough and set your EQ right.. It's mesmerizing,

I've done this for years with the pedal, it expends a lot if energy and it's hard to keep up for very long..
I hate bringing a wah to a bass gig, I'd like to try and recreate it in a small pedal, but the nuances of a crybaby may be hard to recreate,
I think there's a certain feel, or human quality I get with the foot that may be tough to recreate w an auto wah.
I'm looking for something w a lot of adjustable parameters,
My engineer suggested the snow white auto wah, I think Rudy's has one, I'll try it.

Have you thought about the EHX worm? Its modulated wah mode could be exactly what you're looking for.

YouTube - MXR M188 Bass Auto Q Demo Video

Sounds to me like this may be what you want.

Like too many of these vids, you have to wait through about 1 minute of sales BS before you get to the interesting part...

I use my boss AW-3. It has a setting where it will just keep going "wah-wah-wah" forever, and you can set the tempo and some other stuff I don't completely understand. I don't use it (the setting) much though, and when I do attempt to play No Quarter I just use the regular wah setting.

I think JPJ used a Maestro Phaser with a Fender Rhodes, not a wurlitzer or a leslie. I always think wurlitzers are more barky whereas Rhodes have a more xylophone like sound.

This should help greatly I think:

Very close, thnx
Lots of stuff they want u to buy to create it
But yes, this is very close to the crybaby thing I do, the attack sounds very round and Rhodes-y like that, too.
Reverb and delay polish it up but aren't essential,
Essentially,it's a lightning quick,
bass-to-treble filter,that repeats
