Autowah?

Sign in to disble this ad
After reading the thread the other day about the effect on Lenny Kravitz's Fly Away, it got me thinking... We've got a couple songs we do that get a bit funkier than the rest. I wouldn't find having some sort of effect for those songs. What do you guys prefer? Wah? Autowah? Something else? What pedals do you like? I know of several wahs, but the MXR is the only autowah I know of.

Guyatone have two autowahs, the Br-2 which was made Famous by Justin Chancellor from Tool. However the BR-2 is now out of production, so you may have a hard time finding one and expect to pay more than it's worth. Also they also have the Wr-3!

also known as an Envelope Filter or Auto Filter.

I like the Maxon AF9... but there are more opinions on these than compressors.

What about the EBS BassIQ? Has anyone used it? The MultiComp gets so much love here (and I've read good things about the MultiDrive, too), I thought I'd see if the rest of their pedals are as good.

You're thinking of the MXR Auto Q perhaps? There are lots of auto wahs, but only one auto q as far as I know.

I don't think we're meant to be listing envelope filters, auto wahs and envelope filters are different from each other.

Anyway, Boss AW-2.

I really like the MXR Bass Auto Q for some things...like "dark, minory" type things. With a little added delay, it's a very cool effect...but it's not a really drippy, wet sounding effect...so I'm still shopping around for a nice wet filter to add to my board...

For a killer sounding cheap one, see if you can find an old DOD - the green one, can't remember the model FX-25????? maybe that's it. Anyway, those things go for $25 all the time and they sound amazing.

I absolutely the the MXR though. Try pairing it with an octave divider sometime. Also, the settings on that are pretty sensitive, so play with it and see if you can't find some "wetter" settings.

This falls into the filter type effect, but the EHX Bassballs is alot of fun for that funkyness.

i use a subdecay quasar with the frequency pinned at 5 o'clock for a really good auto-wah sound.

I have an envelope filter (pigtronix) and the MXR auto-Q on my board and while they are somewhat similar at certain settings, I find I use the EF a lot and the auto-q on only a few songs when I need pronounced funkiness.

Man, what a random thread. It's like we never heard of a filter or auto-wah before.
