A/B switches (i think)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,
Im looking to be able to use two amps at once, have one amp for clean, and one amp for distorted. i think an a/b switch will do this. however i want to be able to have both running at the same amps outputting at the same time not just one or the other. what would achieve this?

Note:ive also posted this in 'amps' if 'effects' is the wrong place then please delete

An a/b switch won't let you run both at the same time. An a/b/y switch will let you either switch between one or the other, or have both on at the same time.

I've done basically what you want to do with one of these. I had that aby pedal at the beginning of my pedal board. I ran one channel through my effects pedals into a guitar preamp, then into one side of a stereo power amp, then into a 2x10 cabinet. I ran the other channel into a bass preamp, the other side of the power amp, and into a 2x15 cabinet. Even with a cheap, s***y DOD Grunge pedal I got great distortion tones.

There are a lot of options out there. I can say from experience that Loop-master makes great, high-quality stuff at really reasonable prices.

+1

You need an A/B/Y switch.

Radial Twin City ABY. If you want to run two amps at once without tone drop you need this pedal.

I use the Morley ABY switch for two basses into one amp. Don't know how well it works the other way around, but it IS affordable and solid.

I strongly recommend that any splitter you buy be either active (powered) or transformer-isolated. Regular ABY boxes are prone to tone suck, especially if you play passive basses. Radial makes some good options, as do Lehle and [sfx].

I use a Radial BigShot ABY for this purpose and have had good experience with it. It's passive, has selectable transformer isolation, polarity flip and ground lift and an always on Tuner Out. I've used it live and a lot of different ways in recording and it gets the job done, not to mention it's Radial so it's solid construction and can take some stomping.

How can you tell the Radial is on which channel without lights though man? Tough to keep track in the middle of a gig especially if you been being fed shots by the crowd all night! Haha. I'm having a similar dilemma with my signal chain I'm working on for the new set up I'm making and have decided I'm gonna have to put a small Mackie mixer on my board right before the ABY switch to try and get even levels. I can't seem to find any other way to do what I want out of existing ABY switches.

I use a Morley A/B switch. I play 7 string bass in an instrumental drums and bass duo and I rely pretty heavily on loops. The Morley lets me run loops through one rig and leads/melodies through another. The pedal has an "and" and "or" switch which is nice. The or toggles between rigs and the and lets you bring in the other at any time. It also has a bright red LED to let you know which amp/s you're going to. It works really well for what I do.

ABY box for the OP's purpose. I use the Lehle SGoS. Their Little Dual also works well. The Radial Big Shot is very economical and works well. You will get some tone suck when using the isolation transformer with that box. That isn't a problem if your bass is active. If you have a passive bass you can just put a buffered pedal before the ABY box and that will solve the problem.

There are a number of great options out there. I went with the Lehle because it switches silently.
