A/B Testing

Hey all, I was wondering about running A and B chains but I'm not exactly sure what that entails and or means very well. Such as runnig a chain for dirty and a B chain for clean? Does that sound right? I searched some threads to see if there was anything about this and didnt find anything really. My board is getting pretty big now and I think I may need to start doing this.

What are the purposes that you'd do this?
Do you need an amp with an A and a B channel?
Do you need two amps if your amp doesnt have an A/B channel?
How do you guys run yours if you do run A/B channels?
Is there two pedal boards involved?
Show me your setup if you have an A and B channel please.
Thanks so much!
