My 18th birthday is coming up. I tend to get music equipment for birthdays and holidays, and I've slowly gathered the stuff I need to get the sound in my head. So far I have an Ernie Ball Stingray 5H, Gallien Krueger 400 RB and ME410, and Sansamp BDDI Deluxe.
I think the next piece I want to add are new strings (settled on Circle K) and a Darkglass pedal. I have never been one for pedals but Darkglass specifically has called out to me for a long time.
I was set on a B3K (I have a preamp in my BDDI and the B7K is a little pricey) but recently I heard some sound clips of the VMT. The first sound clips made me think "That's not for me" but I've really been surprised at what it could do.
For the most part, I want a tight, focused, aggressive drive. I like it to be centered in the mid range. I'll provide some examples. Sometimes I like a distortion, but 90% of the time I like to be in the aggressive, tight overdrive territory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71zsRJR_X4E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTICUhCqEaY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5212QHHyVs
For those who can't or won't click links, the songs are:
Alice in Chains - Man in the Box
Periphery - Jetpacks was Yes
Avenged Sevenfold - Natural Born Killer
Or any of the songs on the albums they are from
The VMT has shown great potential for me on the lower gain, but it has too much "break" in the notes when you pass even that threshold.
The B3K I like, but on the overdrive/distortion rather than almost fuzzy drive settings.
The other component is that I already have a pretty hot set up. My Ernie Ball and my Sansamp run pretty hot as they are so I don't know how the pedals are going to react.
What do you guys think?
