Back to the 80s...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello...my band's just got a gig playing covers of various 80s songs (probably the likes of Duran Duran for example). Can any of you good people recommend a suitable effects pedal to help me achieve that 80s sound? Thanks in advance...

Boss GEB-7 for the Eq. Thats an easy one to find, works well, etc.

If you're just trying to keep it pretty basic and inexpensive, a Boss chorus, ceb-3 for instance, would do the trick. The Boss eq and chorus can be found for about $50 each. If you look a little harder you can find a ehx small clone for the same price, and that would be my recomendation. An ehx small stone phaser could take its place as well, both in function for cover songs, and price.

As for the compressor, I only have experience with my ebs multicomp, and it's nice and quiet, very easy to use, and sounds good. Can be found for about $130+

Maybe an overdrive as well? What is your price range btw?

Fightthepower: thanks. I wouldn't be looking to spend more than £100 if I can help it.

(We've already got a keyboard player who specialises in cheesy sounds mind you... )

Dont get me wrong I'm not hating on DD, they are ace. but you have to admit the synth sounds are so cheesy.

You may want to look into amp modelling too. For me, Trace Elliot and GK defined the 80's bass sound, from the pop of Level 42 to the rock of Def Leppard and GnR.

You don't have to spend a fortune either, something like the Behringer bass v-amp or Zoom B2.1 can handle amp modelling, compression, eq and the 80's essentials of chorus and synth.

Yes, I can admit that.. I wish they'd sound more edgier myself.

I'd say synth, but if this 80's resurgence goes any further, expect bands to start giving the bassists the boot and replacing them with keys - since that's exactly what happened in the 80's.
