For over thirty years before June '08' I strickly used active basses with all kinds of rack mounted effects and effects pedals. I'd always frowned on Fenders a little and was never really a fan of the Precision or Jazz Bass, but that has all changed since my most recent purchase of a '08' MIA Jazz V. I bought the Jazz V, because of all the hype I'd read here on TB and the reviews it had received from articles that reviewed the new Fender basses.

Before the passive Jazz I was using 2 Flangers, Chorus, Bass Overdrive, MF-102 MoogerFooger Ring Modulator, Noise Suppressor thru an array of active basses, all of which had too many knobs and switches.

I've found that with my new Jazz, the keep it simple approach has been a welcomed blessing. Gone are all those pedals, except I loop a Boss Bass Chorus pedal thru my effects return/send - what a difference. The tone of my Jazz absolutely resonates thru my amp without all this extra drain on my signal - I love it. I can concentrate more on my playing than what pedals I have to stomp on.

How many of you have simplified your setup where it's much more to your liking?

I just posted a thread about it. I wasn't running much but it was more that I didn't want to deal with pedals rather than thinking I piled too much stuff on. I'm stuck with the Microbass because I double on upright, but other than that, I'm running clean again.

A few years back, though, I was running 6 or 7 pedals plus a multi. One night, something went wrong and I didn't have time to diagnose it so I went straight in, and it was such a marked change for the better that I quit using effects right then and there. It's a drag because I love effects. I just hate pedals and stomping and trying to time the stomps with the note and broken patch cables and all that.
