bad monkey vs bdi 21 for classic rock

which would better add that classic rock tone to my rig? which would be more versatile for other uses as well?

Considering they're totally different types of devices, I don't know what to say.

I have both and can't imagine using the Bad Monkey (which is allegedly merely a SMT conversion of the DOD "Juice Box") for bass, and probably not for guitar, either.

On the other hand, I regard the BDI21 to be the only effect in the house that usually sounds better in the signal chain than in the closet. It does a great job of putting some presence in the sound of flatwound-strung basses.

The BDI21 is possibly the only Behringer product that people here actually like. No-brainer, dirt-cheap DI box.

I've tried both. Both are amazing for their prices. I much prefer the overdrive on the Bad Monkey. I found the Bad Monkey great on bass - there's a fair few threads on here about it including sound samples. For overdrive only, I'd choose the Bad Monkey. If you want a DI or preamp pedal then the Behringer is the way to go.

You said in another thread that you had a $100 budget and trying to cop an old school rock tone. With $100 you could purchase both. Get them from Guitar Center, I hear they're very accomodating when it comes to letting you return items after weeks of usage!

But if you can afford an extra $50, the VT Bass is where it's at.

I just picked up a "Badder" Bass Monkey (modded for bass by Humphrey), and it is amazing. You can get them on Ebay for about $95.

As far as I know, GC (or any of the other Bain Capital companies) doesn't carry the Behringer stomps. The two here sure don't.

Look out for used ones then on here, craigslist or eBay, you might be able to get em for $25 each!

I find the BDI and the Bad Monkey well suited with each other.
The BDI always on to get some warmth, and the Bad Monkey to get a very good overdriven tone. I find they work really well together, the BDI helps the Bad Monkey in giving it more "cream" and smoothness.

Beware though, the BDI is a bit tricky to set, it's not hard to end up with a sludgy sound (I'd suggest you to get the Hartke VXL, which is more clear, but I see you're on a tight budget...).

I've had alot of students use Digitech's BP series pedals with no real problems. Although they aren't as rugged as Boss or Digitechs X series they seem to hold up well. And you get a load of effects in one box. The Bad Monkey is a guitar effect. As it has a rather retro sound you'll either like or be stuck with - I didn't find it to my taste and got a Boss DS1 Keeley modded pedal and another MXR distortion+ for guitar work. But these don't sound great for bass as they are EQ'd for guitar. Check out an MXR Blow Torch

tactician- I have been looking into the bad monkey because its been recommended by a lot of people on TB, it is said to work very well with bass even though its a guitar pedal.
as far as the digitech bp series, I know I'm on a budget but I need something better than student quality :\
I've got an audition coming up this weekend for a classic rock band with guys that have been playing for 30 years. I've got to get my tone nailed down

a modded bad monkey is the only drive pedal i bought specifically for bass then sold. just couldn't find a use for it. i have the bdi21 still and don't use it for overdrive (not really a drive pedal), only as a colored di once in a while. it does a nice job and suits classic rock well, be aware overdrive is not a strongpoint of the device.

outside of the two options you've listed, on a budget you might consider looking into the *flame suit on* behringer BOD100 for an overdriven bass tone suitable for generic classic rock. a dod250 might be a nice option as well, i sure like mine.

what amp and bass are you using? strings?

maybe I should have asked more generally huh? ok, I have an audition this weekend for a classic rock band.. and I want that tone that phyll lynott has on the live version or the boys are back in town. probably just the sound of the svt.
anyway, I have a carvin bx1200 head, for cabs I have all carvins to choose from, 210, 410, 810
basses are peavey t-40, yamaha bb414, peavey bxp millenium, epi t-bird, ibanez iceman, and highland thunderchief(semi hollow) all are 4 strings are strung with rounds. and all are wearin super slinkies, except the thundercheif has elixers

If you're looking for an SVT sound, the Bad Monkey is not what you want. The best choice would be the Tech 21 VT bass, which is about $150. The next best choice is the BDDI family from Tech 21, of which the Behringer BDI21 is a clone. So that is probably your best bet at that price point.

thank you bigchief... I probably should have just made that the subject of this thread right off the bat huh? how to get svt sound without svt.
does the vt have decent overdrive? or will I even need that to get the ampeg growl?

I haven't tried it myself, or heard too many clips. But a lot of people have been raving about the VT Bass around here, and yes it has some overdrive, which is supposed to be pretty close to the sound of an overdriven SVT
