Bands/Songs that have effects

Sign in to disble this ad
Im just getting into effects, already have quite a few actually. My only problem is finding good examples of bass effects in a band type setting. I already know some songs with the bass playing effect type, basslines (hopefully that made sense lol..). I know Tool songs have some, and RATM. But what other bands implement bass effects?

Oh, yeah, I know alot of songs with overdrive, but its the other effects I dont hear to often ( Flanger, Phaser, Octave, Auto Wah, etc...) I did some searches, but only found a couple of songs with the aforementioned effects. Also, I listen/play mainly Rock, so stuff in that genre of music would be nice .

Any suggestions to bands/songs would be great!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, look for this songs:
Took out a loan
Need some air
Spread your love
Stop

Take in count that they only have 1 guitar so yes that thing that sounds just like a distorted guitar is actually a bass.

Muse, check out this too:
Hysteria
Starlight
Time is running out

Those 3 intros are made with a bass (and lots of expensive pedals)

Juan Alderete from the Mars Volta usually has an arsenal of effects going on at the same time

I suppose that I'll be the one that mentions Tool. Every song. Seriously. Its just about what effects he uses at different times through 99% of thier songs.

Damn, everyone beat me to it.

Yeah basicly every song has an effect in it. Especially the Lateralus and 10Kday albums.

Check out Muse's "City Of Delusion" and (of course) "Plug In Baby" They both use some kind of cool filter.

Lots of funk songs have envelope filter, wah and fuzz.
RHCP-Sir Psycho Sexy for example has env. filter
Pink Floyd-Another Brick part 2 has delay

RHCP - Higher Ground.

After the bass intro, most of the verse riff (the E-G-A slapping riff) is played by Flea with quite a bit of Q-Tron or Auto-Q.

Very Bootsy!

look for progressive and experimental bands they tend to lean towards a more effect-sy side of the music spectrum. porcupine tree had its moments and of course justin chancellor has more effects then peter frampton and david gilmour combined. i find local bands (in seattle) there are alot of drum and bass duos using effects such as ManDroidz and The Last Slice of Butter. search em on myspace.

Kill Me Tomorrow is a band from San Diego whose use of effects, especially on bass, is very frequent and very awesome.

K8 (bass player) is one of my favorite players, in large part due to the many insane voices she throws down. The last time I saw them was before I was a total pedal nerd, so I wasn't able to identify any of what she was using, but I remember that there was a lot and that it sounded great.

Pink Floyd's "One of these days" uses a ton of echo and on "Have a Cigar" he uses a flanger

as someone else says in their signature,
listen to big business.
he uses lots of overdrive and distortion, but also several weird effects.

also, check out the thrones, joe preston's solo project.
it's all bass with loads and loads of weird stuff piled on. his live show is just him, a drum machine, and about 4 million little pedals and boxes on a table that make noise. lots of cool stuff.

also check out the red sparrowes. it's a full band, and the bassist plays fretless, but the guitars and bass are all running some sort of effect through the whole album, and it pretty much runs the gamut of phasers/delay/synth noises.

you might also want to look for a zoom b1. I just bought one because it was cheap, and i wanted a headphone amp. it does a lot of amp modeling, and has a pretty impressive range of effects. for 60 bucks, it's a great deal. it would give you a chance to play several effects and see what would be most useful to you. then go buy the pedals that do that effect really well.

I agree about listening to RHCP or better yet, Bootsy for some great envelope filter examples.

I didn't see an example of where to hear bass with chorus - check out Alice In Chains Angry Chair, and iirc, Stranglehold by Ted Nugent has chorus on the bass.

I just saw the band Local H....its just a guitarist and a drummer. But the Guitarist uses Bass pickups on his guitar and splits his signal to one guitar rig and one bass rig. On top of all the effects he uses. It was the first band without a bassist that i really like.
