Basic pedalboard for newb

I'm not smart when it comes to effects for bass. I played guitar for a few years before recently switching to bass(permanently). So now I've only been playing basss for a few months and seem to be making some progress. Not ready for a band yet. Maybe in 6-12 months.

I currently play a G&L Tribute L-2000 bass thru a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 with a 1x12 Genz cab. I hope to soon add a Fender USA Jazz bass.

My favorite music is rock, heavy rock, alternative, progressive, and fusion. I really like bands like Rush, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Tool, etc. I'm a huge fan of Geddy Lee and John Myung.

So I'm wondering what effects pedals I should start with in putting together a basic pedal board. I really love the dirty, modern tone I get from the Genz Benz shuttle, so I'm not sure I need a ton of effects. I really love Geddy's tone on the Rush records.

Thanks in advance!!

Seeing as your just looking to experiment with some effects in general, perhaps pick up a multi effect, such as a Zoom or Digitech, and experiment with a few sounds to see what suits you. Then you can start to look into individual effects more tailored to your needs and wants

I recommend a good tuner as a must. I use the Korg DT-10, and I love it! It is the most accurate one out there, really easy to read in the dark, simple, built like a tank.

Other than than, get yourself a 2nd hand Line 6 Bass Pod Xt from ebay (bass pod live Xt is better, but more expensive). For the same cost as a few mid range pedals you get a world of sounds that are customisable from heaven to hell! I love mine to death! It is also a great recording interface.

Single pedals are 'better', but for ease, cost, and amazing tone, bass pod Xt all the way!

Yea but can I plug the Bass Pod directly into my amp like an effects pedal?

I used to have one for guitar(Pod XT Live) and it never sounded good thru an amp. I always had to use it with a PA, headphones, or thru my monitor speakers.

I dont want to bypass my Shuttle.

I believe that's how it's intended to work, in front of your amp.

Just turn off the amp/cab modeling and use the effects.
