Bass Angler...should I?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I got the email from John stating that the Bass Angler I was on the list for is now ready. Just wondering if I should pull the trigger or not.

Strangely enough, I've owned/tried/built most overdrives available, and I've still not found what I'm looking for. I guess I'm looking for a nasty, grindy, transparent drive similar to my V4 when cranked...with no loss of lows.

Thanks for the help!

It sounds like you're still looking for a solid OD, so my first inclination is to say yes, take it. Also, it's almost assured that you'll be able to sell the BA for what you paid for it (or at least, very close to it), since they're so rare. Granted, I don't know what John is charging for them (even though I too am on the list).

Out of curiosity, when did you get on the list? Just curious to gauge how far back I still am.

Man...it's been so long I can't even remember. I'm guessing quite a while, which is why I was a little surprised when I got his email!

I just got an old green Bass Angler the other day. As far as I know, they are the same as the current ones? Anyway, I love it.

I also have the Blueberry. I find that there is something similar about the two, but the Blueberry has a much fatter, darker and more tubey sound while the Angler has more of a mid zing to it. I'm using the Angler heaps at the moment and could even go as far as to say that I like it more than the Blueberry in a mix.... I'm in a Honeymoon period with the Angler though and have owned a Blueberry for donkey's years, so that 'new factor' could have something to do with it.

Either way, I wouldn't pass it up! I'm sure someone would be willing to relieve you of it if it didn't end up being your thing.

I just got the email too--and I signed up exactly three years ago. In the interim I was able to borrow an Angler for a while, and it did not "do it" for me. I won't be ordering. Seems like those that love it, think it's king of the heap--and those that don't, just shrug and say "meh".

FWIW I generally go for the dark/fat thing, not the bright/cutting thing.

I read your post again and should probably answer it more directly...

The Angler can get pretty 'nasty', but the tone gets a bit buzzy when you crank the dredge knob up a bit. I know the previous posts I have read about it say that it doesn't sound the best on its own at home. While I actually quite like it, I can certainly see where people are coming from there.

It retains the low end well enough, but it certainly doesn't have the added oomph and fatness of the Blueberry.

I think if you have the cash to drop on it, you should give it a try at least.

it ended my search for OD's. i personally love the fuzzy sound in the 3:00+ area on the "dredge" knob. i know what bongo's talking about in terms of the bright/cutting thing....if you plan on using it in a band situation, however, it NEVER gets lost in the mix. its my personal fav, but i am saving up the loot for (and hoping to find) a BJFE BBBOD. i say get it, it'll sell very fast with little or no financial loss for you if you aren't down.

I'm running mine at 3:00 on the dredge knob as well. Cuts like a knife.

My od opinions

Bbbod = recording/solo
Angler = live with band
Sft = either

Of course you should. I just looked back at my email and it would be almost three years since I thought I got on the list. I now realized that I'm probably not on the list since my email didn't say, "put me on the list" I was a little more vague and just inquired about the list.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Yeah...my ideal overdrive tone is pretty hard to describe. My V4 when cranked is pretty harsh and buzzy as well...but sounds great in a mix. It still has the fullness and bottom I love. I guess I'm looking for something like that yet transparent.

I'm interested in overdrives like the Xotic BB and the SFT, yet I'd like to stay away from tubescreamer-like overdrives (had lots). If the Angler is somewhat trebly, that doesn't bother me as long as the overdrive is not necessarily "farty" if that makes any sense.

I think I'll take mine if it ever gets to me. In practice, the BBBOD sounds more in my ally, but I've wanted to try one of these so badly since I found out about them. Can anyone popping up on the list PM me or just openly state what they are paying for them? I've seen them go around $200 every time I've seen them pop up, but I'm still not sure what the new price is.

why not get an sft or vt, then? the vt does v4, svt and b-15 tones dead on. no experience with the sft, but recordings i've heard make me think it does the same.

I got that email as well, I signed up in September 2007, unfortunately for me he wants a cheque or money or which I just can't do in the UK so hes speaking to Pedal Geek I assume so that they can take payment and ship it to me.

I'm not sure I want it and if going through Pedalgeek ups the price then I definately don't want it.

If anyone wants mine let me know and I;'ll just say to John I have a friend that will ship it to me his name is "x" and you can expect the cheque in a few days, then it's all on you.

Cheers

I've had a VT (well, a couple actually). Nice pedal, but it didn't really do it for me. I'm definitely going to try a SFT when I can. I guess I'm looking for a "transparent" drive more than anything.
