Bass Dance Effects Live Pedal

Sign in to disble this ad
I am in a live electronic, dance, house, psychedelic band. Similar to Disco Biscuits, The New Deal, and Pretty Lights. I have just fallen into a good chunk of money, and I want to get the perfect floor pedal. I want a multi effects pedal, where I can switch between all of my effects live and on the fly. It should have at least 4 switchable effects, with banks that I can switch between as well. We do 45 minute jams where I may need to use 16-20 different effects, so I need to able to do all of this without using my hands. I would like to able to switch out tones through a USB (if such a thing exists) so that way I never run out of effects.

I have been playing in live bands for 7 years, but have never gotten into using effects, I have always played clean bass. So I hope you guys can help an effects noob out

I am also looking at the Boss GT-10B, this seems to be the best option right now from what I can find. Any opinions?

Line 6 M13. There are several threads about it here.

The Line 6 Bass Pod XT Live, M9/13 and the Boss GT-6B/10B would all satisfy your criteria. My personal choice would be either the GT-10B or the M13, but it's all personal choices. Might I suggest using the search function on the forums to dig up information on the units, there's LOTS about and also having a look for video demos on youtube and the respective manufacturer's websites. They are all top notch units, but work in different ways, so it comes down to what YOU want.

I have been looking to do the same thing as you and have also played only clean bass for about 6 years.

I'm playing in a New Deal type project. I have a Moog EP-2 > Moog LPF > Mastotron > Boss OC-2 and it gets some great tones, but I think you might be better off with a multi-effect pedal instead of customized board

I play in a live elecectronica band influenced by the same bands you mentioned. I was using the Boss Me-50b but personally found it was good for song writing but wasn't all that great for jamming. The reason being in a song i wanted to have an effect on in the beginning part of a song (like auto wah, overdrive, and delay) and then quickly have a dramatic change of effects during a different part (maybe octave, fuzz, and tremolo)- this made things easier because I only had to tap one pedal to change a lot of sounds. The problem comes when I'm in a jam I often like the effects to add or subtract depending on the pace and intensity of the jam. So maybe the jam starts with octave only, then start working in low pass filter and overdrive, then add distortion, and finally put chorus on top of that... Then remove chorus, distortion, and octave, leaving overdrive an lpf on and put a delay on.

I view it like this- multi effects are like crayons- they give bold colors that can be made to look awesome but you can't mix and match them live.

Stomp boxes are like paint- depending on which you choose to mix together will change your final color by a lot.

They each have their place.

John Davis from nerve uses a line6 and stasik from umphreys has used the me20b. But they both combine individual pedals with the Multi.

Also the quality of the effects in a Multi are not as good or unique. The may have a few really good sounds but the majority of them will be sub par or average at best- and I don't believe any have an expression pedal controlled low pass filter- which is at the heart of electronica.

It gets pricey but its well worth it in the end.

As far as the standard electronica sound goes- their are tons and tons of threads about this.

I think I have settled on the GT-10B for my multi effects pedal after doing some research. What stomp boxes would you all reccomend on top of that?

Check into the Roland GR-55. Nobody has one yet, but they're starting to ship. They provide a lot less functionality regarding actual effects. But they provide 2 PCM synth channels that should more than make up for it, and give you a variety of new sounds via the synth portion. Technically you could still run it into more effects.

Otherwise the Line6 M13 or Boss GT-10B would be a good multiFX to start with.

Right now in my amazon cart I have...
MOOG EP2 Expression Pedal
MOOG MF101 Moogerfooger Low Pass Envelope Filter Pedal
Boss GT-10B Multi-Effects Pedal
BOSS PSA-120 AC Adapter (for the GT-10B)
Mastotron Fuzz Guitar Effect Pedal

Anything else? Or is this a good start?

My gripe with the Moog MF-101 is that all of the fun functionality (beats synced LFO, etc.) is provided via the expensive Moog MP-201.

Note the GT-10B comes with it's own AC adapter. Also note that while the GT-10B doesn't have the best sounding fuzz/dirt it's likely totally usable for you if you pair it with the preamps and EQ even if you run it into a regular amp - the amp/speaker sims offer some powerful tone shaping which pair well with the blah-sounding fuzz/dirt effects in the GT-10B.

So is the Moog MF-101 and Moog EP2 not worth getting without the Moog MP-201?

Does that mean it's not worth it to buy a completely seperate fuzz pedal?

I wouldn't say it's not worth it...once you get good with the EP-2 and set the cutoff to a nice place (9 o'clock about) you can get some greatness out of it

I dont have any experience with the MP-201 but I plan on checking it out in the future because it has some incredible implications

other fuzzes to check out are the Orbit CoPilot and the Iron Ether Oxide..I don't have personal experience with them but they were recommended to me in another thread

I'm not saying it's not worth it. Just that in my personal opinion, and I'm just one person, it's a huge, expensive pedal with basic functionality if you're using it only with an expression pedal. You're not going to get any type of automated filtering sounds, just mostly slow sweeps. But the GT-10B doesn't have anything that can cop that tone, just wah wahs (though they can be controlled with LFO). The Uni-V effect can sort of get a LFO sounding filter-ish sound depending on the signal it's fed, but it's absolutely not a fat LPF filter.

If you planned to use the Moog for straight/stagnant cutoff, you can probably get by with the EQ and other tone shaping in the GT-10B. I just never found a way to get anything resembling an actual movable LPF in the GT-10B. But there's a lot of fun sounds in there, and the built-in synth effect can have it's cutoff assigned to expression so there's a lot of options.

Since I can't afford to get all of that, and the MP201 I guess I will just have to wait on the Moog LPF, even though I was really excited for it=/

So just the GT-10B and the Fuzz should be a good start? Any other reccomendations?

The Bass Pod Xt Live was my first pedal. still on my board. Excellent starting point, especially if you really want to dial a specific tone. More banks than i can fill up, really good for live apps, and if you want to tweak pedal parameters you can do so with an expression pedal. in addition to that and many other stop boxes i have, i have the M13 which is also very very good. i think it has 16 'scenes" which would be like your presets, and then for each of the 4 types of effect you can have on, there are 3 different preset buttons, (for progressions of effects for example) but i really really recommend the Bass pod Xt live.

bottom line.. i love the Bass pod xt live, but there are limits to it. I love the M13, it has a looper, pitch shifting abilities, and pretty much anything you could think of, besides some of the synths.

the line after the bottom.. i have not found a great synth pedal yet. interested in the bass synth wah..
