bass distortion help

Sign in to disble this ad
I play a rick out of a svt7 pro head and am looking for a good bass distortion pedal. I am looking for bass distortion tone along the lines of circa survive, glassjaw etc. I play in a melodic hardcore band with a lot of instrumental passages and thought some nice bass fuzz would add punch.

I had a big muff and it sounded too messy, and i had some cheap digitech distortion. Obviously that sucked. Any ideas? I am looking for pedals i can actually find and purchase. Not a rat from the 80s modded, although that would be nice. :hmm

I'm confused...the bands that you mentioned use rats on bass...then you said you don't want a rat...then you said it would be nice...

Let me clarify you for you: you want a vintage or vintage RI rat.

The first response... go to his page. He makes a Rat clone that is BA!!! as well as other fuzz's and Overdrives. Trust me, his stuff is awesome. Thread search for Fuzzrocious and read all the hype.

The Juggernaut is the bass rat and just about 98% of the dudes on here hate it. You're better off with a vintage, vintage RI, or clone designed for bass.

I recently tried their bass distortion pedal( the silverstone,I think) and was very much impressed.
By a very long margin the best distortion pedal I have heard so far.

Dude get a vintage reissue rat. Not that difficult to find. I just got one a couple weeks ago on ebay for $99! AND its the best distortion Ive found on bass by far after getting and selling all tech 21 stuff, aguilar agro, boss od, and a few more I tried and didnt like. I play in a melodic punk/ indie band. Oh and circa survive dude used vinage reissue I believe. Just make sure you avoid the newer rats and the rat 2. They are ****.

From what your describing, the tech 21 xxl bass edition distortion pedal would be right up your alley. this pedal has a heavy duty sound and packs a lot of punch. here are some sound samples of the tech 21 xxl bass edition distortion pedal. courtesy of bass tasters.com

For hardcore, I would get the following.

Boss LS-2 line selector. Trust me.
HBE Hematoma
Vintage Rat (Unmodded)

Place the hematoma and rat in loop one. Leave loop two empty. You can crank the rat and hematoma to get amazing grinding tone, while mixing loop two in for the desired amount of clean, to keep the bottom end deep and heavy. Your Russian big muff would work in this setup as well.

I stack distortion all the time this way, and double stack for effect. Sometimes I use the muff and clean, sometimes my Animato and clean. Sometimes muff and animato are both on 50/50. You would be surprised how good some cheaper boxes can sound with clean blended in to retain a deep bottom.

+1 on the LS-2... works wonders. My personal recommendation for the actual dirt pedal would be a Fulltone OCD, or at the very least stay away from anything that says BOSS, or BASS.
